Over 7,000 islands make up the Philippines, a country off the coast of Southeast Asia. Best known as an affordable tropical destination, the Philippines are home to amazing beaches in places like Boracay, El Nido and Palawan.

The capital city of Manila is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with nearly two million people. There are many historic Spanish colonial sites in Manila, including a 16th-century church.

Currency: Philippine peso can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Philippines, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.

Power Points: The Philippines has a number of different plugs required depending where you visit, I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter especially for non Australians.

Official Language: The official language of Philippines is Filipino and English.

Health: There are a few major health concerns in Philippines for travellers such as measles and polio, as well as waterborne, foodborne, parasitic and other infectious diseases are common. I would highly recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.

Drinking Tap Water: The tap water is not generally safe to drink, bottled water should only be consumed in the Philippines.

Visa: Most countries don’t require a visa for short stays, to visit the Philippines.

Popular foods:
Lumpia (deep-fried spring roll, filled with minced meat and veggies).
Pancit (noodles, meat and veggies).
Cassava cake (cake made out of freshly grated cassava flour and coconut milk).
Chicharon (deep fried pork crackling).

When to go: The Philippines experiences year-round heat and humidity, with June through October seeing the heaviest rainfall. Between December and February, when temperatures are at their lowest and rain is typically absent, is the ideal time to visit the Philippines.
