With its main island and 167 islets, Cebu’s draw to tourists lies in its diverse landscapes – from beautiful beaches to rugged mountains. My personal favorite has always been the historic Cebu City, the Philippines’ oldest city, rich in culture and history. Each visit here feels like stepping back in time, yet with all the modern comforts, you would expect in this day and age.

In terms of accommodations, Cebu caters to all sort of travellers. As someone who enjoys the city, I find Cebu City ideal for those who want a blend of history and urban expereinces. However, if luxury and relaxation are what you’re after, the islands of Mactan, Bantayan, and Malapascua offer more luxurious resorts.

Both the rooms and bathrooms are fairly spacious, offering relaxing views of the pool and the tropical gardens.

The Movenpick Hotel on Mactan Island is an amazing accommodation in Cebu if you want to be right by the waterfront. This hotel has its own private beach, an outdoor swimming pool, and four diverse dining options. The modern two-bedroom family suite with ocean views is ideal for a holiday with the kids. Stop by the Lobby Lounge for complimentary treats during “Chocolate Hour”, drop the kids off at the Little Birds Club for fun daily activities, and pick up some souvenirs at the gift shop.

During my stay at Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort, a stunning beachfront resort, I indulged in so many spa treatments at in their spa, one of Asia’s largest, and ate my weight in food at a few of their nine restaurants. The resort offers a blend of luxury and comfort with rooms in the main and ocean wings, complete with bathtubs and minibars. My days were spent alternating between the beach and the pool, making my super relaxing. This resort is a perfect choice for those looking relaxation and foodie adventures.

The location is perfect, as it is close enough to everything (and only a short walk from two great beaches) yet is in a quiet area. This adults-only accommodation has mixed dorms with privacy curtains, as well as some private rooms with double beds. There’s a really laid-back vibe here, with evening entertainment and a restaurant serving food to suit any dietary requirements.

At D’Gecko Hotel, you can stay only 70 metres from Panagsama Beach, one of the best beaches in the south of Cebu. This budget-friendly hotel has clean and air-conditioned king and queen rooms with electric kettles and fridges, as well as family rooms with bunk beds. D’Gecko offers a 24-hour front desk. Plus, it’s easy to book day trips and other excursions here at the tour desk.

The staff are super helpful, and will even wake you up in the morning to ensure you get on the first boat to see the whale sharks.

A nice, welcoming place for backpackers and budget travellers to stay is the Malapascua Budget Inn. There are 4-bed, 10-bed and 14-bed dorms, plus double and family rooms with private bathrooms. Only a short walk from several beaches, the hostel has a shared lounge and bar to hang out at and have a chat with the friendly staff or some fellow travellers.

My stay at Blue Corals Resort in Malapascua was really good, especially given how affordability it is! Its private beach was perfect for snorkeling and relaxing on the beach. Despite being a budget hotel, the range of services impressed me – from laundry to massages and even bicycle rentals. The convenience of room service and the daily breakfast at their restaurant added to my stay. I chose a simple bungalow with a fan for an authentic experience, but they also offer deluxe suites with air conditioning for those who prefer more comfort.

Each room has a large veranda facing the garden, with a cosy area to hang out.

The 3-star Blanco Beach Resort Malapascua is a beautifully-designed place to stay that offers incredible value for money. The resort really embraces its natural beachfront setting, with lovely gardens and a charming tiki-style bar. The deluxe double rooms have large balconies with views of the sea, while the extra-spacious family room has two large, comfy beds. You can also request connecting rooms. The staff will go above and beyond for special occasions like birthdays if you let them know in advance.
