Maumere – Where to stay in Flores Island for beach lovers

Maumere is the largest city on Flores Island and is home to the main airport, with several daily flights to the mainland.

Located along the northeast end of Flores Island, Maumere is a popular destination for both outdoor adventure and cultural experiences. One popular day trip from Maumere is to visit the village of Sikka, just 30 kilometers away, where weaving is an important industry.

You can take a tour to watch the entire process, from dying the threads to the actual weaving of clothes. Another popular excursion from Maumere is to the coloured lakes of Mount Kelimutu, which are three hours by car.

Offshore, the once spectacular diving areas are still recovering from a tsunami, but that doesn’t mean Maumere isn’t a great base for exploring the eastern end of Flores Island.

Ende – Where to stay in Flores Island for relaxation

Along the central-southern coast of Flores is Ende, the second-largest city on the island. This is one of the lesser-visited areas of the island, Ende is the best area for tourists who really want to get away and enjoy a laid-back budget-friendly vacation.

If you plan to visit Kelimutu Mountain and the coloured lakes, they are about two hours from Ende, making them a popular day trip from this city.

One of the most photographed spots in the area is Blue Stone Beach, and the town also has several cultural and historical attractions. Ende even has a small airport, so you can bypass Maumere and Labuan Bajo all together.

Ruteng – Where to stay in Flores Island for outdoor lovers

Ruteng is a small town in the center of the western end of Flores Island, about three hours inland from Labuan Bajo.

The inland location makes it the perfect area for travelers looking to explore small villages and have outdoor adventures in the nearby countryside and jungles.

The nearby rice fields at Cancar are a popular spot to photograph, thanks to the intricate spider web patterns that are formed in the fields.

Ranamese Lake is another cool spot to check out near Ruteng; the lake is formed in a crater and is over 40 meters deep. While swimming is not allowed, there are two viewpoints from which you can observe this unique spot.

Near Kelimutu Mountain – Where to stay in Flores Island for adventure travellers

Kelimutu Mountain is towards the eastern end of the island and is best known for the National Park and coloured lakes found here.

The Kelimutu volcano has three coloured lakes which are said to even change colour from time to time. The surrounding area is excellent for hiking and photography.

Given the long distance from both Ende and Maumere, many travelers choose to stay in a nearby village in order to have more time to explore the national park.

The small village of Moni is the closest place to the mountain, with a few homestay locations scattered throughout other nearby villages. Staying near Kelimutu Mountain is truly for the most adventurous travelers.
