Maumere is the largest city on Flores Island and is home to the main airport, with several daily flights to the mainland.
Located along the northeast end of Flores Island, Maumere is a popular destination for both outdoor adventure and cultural experiences. One popular day trip from Maumere is to visit the village of Sikka, just 30 kilometers away, where weaving is an important industry.
You can take a tour to watch the entire process, from dying the threads to the actual weaving of clothes. Another popular excursion from Maumere is to the coloured lakes of Mount Kelimutu, which are three hours by car.
Offshore, the once spectacular diving areas are still recovering from a tsunami, but that doesn’t mean Maumere isn’t a great base for exploring the eastern end of Flores Island.

If you plan to visit Kelimutu Mountain and the coloured lakes, they are about two hours from Ende, making them a popular day trip from this city.
One of the most photographed spots in the area is Blue Stone Beach, and the town also has several cultural and historical attractions. Ende even has a small airport, so you can bypass Maumere and Labuan Bajo all together.
