Fussen Town – Where to stay in Fussen for tourists

Fussen Germany is a charming village and an excellent place to stay and experience Bavarian culture for a few days. If you prefer smaller towns over large cities and just want a low-key destination in the Alps, then Fussen is perfect.

The Old Town squares fill up with people in the summer, as sidewalk cafes pop up amongst the brightly colored buildings. Fussen has a castle, Hohes Schloss, as well as museums and many hotels to choose from.

Old Town Fussen is the best area for tourists who want to stay awhile, explore the region and see more than the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. It’s a great home base for exploring nearby towns like Garmisch, Konstanz, and even Innsbruck.

Fussen is also where you’ll find the highest concentration of accommodation, from budget-friendly guesthouses to family-friendly hotels and accommodation near Neuschwanstein castle.

Schwangau – Where to stay in Fusen for Snow Bunnies

Just five minutes from Fussen is the Bavarian town of Schwangau. At just a quarter of the population of Fussen, Shwangau is even more quaint and a smidge closer to Neuschwanstein. Known as the “village of the Royal castles,” Schwangau is an outdoor paradise.

Forggensee is the fifth largest lake in Bavaria, and the Tegelbergbahn mountain cable car offers access to hiking and mountain biking trails or ski slopes in the winter.

The famed Romantic Road ends (or begins) at Schwangau and Fussen, offering several beautiful German villages within a days’ reach. If you are deciding where to stay near Neuschwanstein Castle but would like other things to do, Schwangau is an excellent choice.

Hohenschwangau – Where to stay near Neuschwanstein Castle

Hohenschwangau is the name of the castle where King Ludwig II grew up, and now the name for the village surrounding the castle.

The name roughly means “above Schwangau” as Schwangau was the main village near the castle at the time. Just three kilometers from Schwangau, this is where to stay when visiting Neuschwanstein Castle on an overnight trip or if you want to be the first one at the castle.

There are a few hotels and restaurants, but it is a pretty sleepy village and is the main train stop for travelers visiting Neuschwanstein on a day trip from Munich or elsewhere. Of course, you may also want to visit Hohenschwangau Schloss while you’re here and see where Ludwig II got his start.

Hopfen am See – Where to stay in Fussen on a budget

If a lakeside resort town is more your speed, check out the village of Hopfen am See, on Hopfensee lake. Only six kilometers from Fussen, the lake has been drawing travelers for years.

Whether you prefer boating, hiking or cycling, there are many outdoor activities easily accessed from Hopfen am See.

There are even campgrounds along the lake if you are looking for super budget-friendly accommodations.

If you are more of a luxury traveler, Hopfen am See is a spa town with wellness resorts waiting to welcome you. Waterfront restaurants and hotels will “wow” you with stunning mountain views.
