Where to go in Florence on your honeymoon

Florence is a small and very walkable city, therefore the historic city centre is ideal as a base for your adventures. Here is a guide to the best neighbourhoods to stay in to ensure that you make the most of your time in Florence:

Ponte Vecchio

This gorgeous medieval bridge spans the width of the Arno River and survived the bombings during World War II. There are great areas nearby to stay with incredible views over the river and is the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful sunsets.

Around the bridge, you will find charming streets filled with music, street performances and plenty of tourists. There are many great restaurants around the area that are not only aimed at tourists but provide quality Italian cuisine.

Piazza della Repubblica

Just 15 minutes’ walk from many of the historical sites of Florence, the Piazza della Repubblica is a great place to stay. It is only two minutes on foot to the Piazza Del Duomo where you can visit the Basilica and only 10 minutes on foot to Ponte Vecchio.

The square is lively and you will find a host of street performers, musicians and even markets going on almost every day of the week and weekend. The restaurants around here may be a little overpriced and touristy but aside from this point, it is a photographer’s dream!

Santa Croce

Slightly further away from the historic centre of Florence, Santa Croce is ideal for a quieter honeymoon in Florence.

The centre is only 10 to 15 minutes away by foot and you will find plenty of quirky and unique boutiques, restaurants and cafes. The Santa Croce area is quite large and encompasses the medieval area near the Uffizi Gallery.

It is also renowned for its leather factories where you can purchase quality handmade products at the Leather School or Scuola di Cuoio, right next to the Santa Croce Basilica.

The Basilica itself is a must-visit, being the final resting place of famous artists such as Michelangelo, Rossini and the astronomer Gallileo Galilei.

Important information on Florence for your honeymoon

Most visitors arrive in Florence by plane to the two nearby airports of Pisa and Bologna, situated over an hour away from Florence by car.

The airports are connected by regular train and buses to Santa Maria Novella Station in the city centre. By train, Florence is only one and a half hours away from Rome and only two hours away from the charming city of Venice.

Getting around Florence is easy as it is a very compact city, everything is within walking distance. You can also opt for the tiny electric buses that traverse the city if your feet get too tired from walking.

There are also taxis available but you cannot hail them from the street, you have to book them by calling on the phone. If you are struggling to find one of the taxi stands around the city, you can always ask pop into a restaurant or hotel and ask them to help you book a taxi.

Car rental is not recommended in Florence as finding parking and navigating the traffic and one-way roads can be quite difficult.

If you are planning a trip to Florence and you wish to visit some museums or historical sites, book your tickets well in advance! Bookings to climb the Duomo to see the incredible views are often sold out and many museums have daily restrictions on the number of visitors permitted.

For free attractions, such as the Cathedral of Florence, there are no options to skip-the-line, so go earlier than the opening time of 10 am and prepare to wait in a queue!

It is worth bearing in mind that when visiting religious sites, tourists should cover their legs and shoulders or they will be refused entry. There are also plenty of street hawkers selling scarves and sarongs for those who are not appropriately dressed, so there is always a backup option!

Florence Cathedral of Saint Mary of Flower, Florence Duomo and Giotto s Campanile of Florence Cathedral in Florence, Italy.

The best time to visit Florence is during the months of May and June, and then again in September. July and August should be avoided for the sweltering heat as Florence actually has a subtropical climate which is hot and humid and has an average temperature of around 30 °C.

You can also visit in early Spring from April to May where you will have an average temperature of 18 – 23 °C, but be prepared for spring showers and carry an umbrella or raincoat with you! If you’re on a budget consider braving more changeable weather to take advantage of lower hotel rates, fewer crowds of tourists and shorter queues to all the monuments and attractions.

The language spoken around Italy is Italian, however, English is widely understood, especially in the main tourist destinations. The local currency is the Euro and there are many ATMs available around the city. It is advisable to carry cash with you as there are many restaurants and shops that only accept cash. It’s also a good idea to carry small change as public restrooms usually cost €1.

To calculate the cost for your honeymoon you should budget around €116 per person, per day. Travellers generally spend around €24 on meals daily and around €19 per day for transportation. If you’re planning for a week, it is safe to budget around €1,623 per couple for the entire week including accommodation.

Tuscan food is delicious and there are many local specialties to try and the level of hygiene is relatively high.

Avoid the overpriced tourist restaurants in the city centre that do not serve authentic Italian food and seek out the hidden gems of the city to get a true taste of Tuscan cuisine. Tap water is safe to drink in the cities, in some rural areas the tap water is not potable.

Travel insurance should be purchased in advance of your travels.
