Where To Stay in Wroclaw [Best Places to Stay for 2024]

Wroclaw, Poland. Aerial view of Park Stanislawa Tolpy on autumn sunrise

Wroclaw is the fourth largest city in Poland with a population of around 640,000 people. It presents itself as the cool, slightly quirky cousin in the family.

This city has a vibrant market square, killer brunch cafes, and hundreds of little bronze gnome statues that began life as an anti-communist political movement. Because it’s quite a small city and all the main sites are concentrated in one area, you might think it would be difficult to figure out where to stay in Wroclaw.

It’s not! Yes, the city centre is where you’ll find the majority of hotels in Wroclaw. But like every cool university town, there are lots of neighbourhoods dotted around that have their own special characteristics and amazing things to do.

This guide will break down where to stay in Wroclaw for backpackers, families with kids, first-timers, and more. It will list the best accommodation in Wroclaw if you’re looking for cheap hotels in Wroclaw or a luxury experience.

This 2024 MUST read guide will cover off where to stay in Wroclaw, where to stay in Wroclaw for nightlife, the best places to stay in Wroclaw for honeymooners, the best places to stay backpackers in Wroclaw, the best places to stay for families in Wroclaw and of course, a general guide of the best hotels in Wroclaw.

Old Town/Stare Miasto – Where To Stay in Wroclaw for First Timers

Wroclaw’s Old Town (known as Stare Miasto in Polish and also called Wroclaw Centrum) is in the heart of the entire city. It’s bordered by the River Oder to the north and the Kazimierza Wielkiego ring road to the south.

Every visitor, whether they are backpackers or enjoying a weekend city break, will spend most of their trip within the boundaries of this neighbourhood. And if you’re visiting the Christmas markets, you’ll find them here too. That’s why it’s perfect if you want to know where to stay in Wroclaw for first-timers!

This is where you’ll find Wroclaw’s Market Square with its stunning historic pastel townhouses with stepped gable roofs. Wroclaw Old Town Hall is also in this neighbourhood, as are the notable Hansel and Gretal twin medieval houses.

You can also climb up the tower of the 14-century St Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Parish Church here to witness unrivalled views of the city. Stare Jatki, lined with art galleries, is a popular cobbled street in this neighbourhood and the Wroclaw Market Hall is in Stare Miasto too.

No matter your budget or what type of Wroclaw hotel you’re looking for, you’ll find plenty of options to suit you in this neighbourhood.

It can offer apartments, hostels, and guesthouses too. One of the best things about visiting a less popular Polish city like Wroclaw is that the room rates for the best 4-star hotels start from around €70 per night. Bargain!

Four Temple District – Best Wroclaw Neighbourhood for Foodies

Just south of Wroclaw Centrum sandwiched between the Kazimierza Wielkiego ring road and the Fosa Miejska canal is the Four Temple District. Some call this the Jewish Quarter because it’s historically where the Jewish population in Wroclaw lived.

But since 1995, the local Jewish and Christian communities have attempted to promote cross-religion unity by renaming the neighbourhood. This new name highlights the four temples of different faiths within 300m of each other in this district.

Aside from religion, the quality and quantity of eateries are why many visitors flock to this neighbourhood. It has a phenomenal selection of brunch restaurants like Central Cafe and Dinette.

Wroclaw also has a surprising number of Italian migrants and residents of Italian descent, so much so that the media nicknamed the city “Poland’s Little Italy.” Many of the best restaurants in Wroclaw serve Italian cuisine, for example, VaffaNapoli and PanZerotti.

Some of the best hotels in Wroclaw, with four or five stars, are situated in the Four Temple District. Considering this neighbourhood is only a hop, skip, and a jump away from all the city’s landmarks in Wroclaw Centrum, this is a great location to have a base for your trip.

Cathedral Island & Other Islands – Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Wroclaw Neighbourhood

Did you know that Wroclaw has at least 112 bridges throughout the city? There are only two European cities with more, Venice and Amsterdam. And they have a much longer canal network. The reason behind this excessive number is that Wroclaw is a city with several islands.

The main ones are Piasek Island (Sand Island), Daliowa Island (Dahlia Island), Tamka Island, Mlynska Island (Mill Island), Bielarska Island (Bleachers Island), Słodowa Island (Malt Island). Kepa Mieszczanska is the largest Island.

They all sit in Wroclaw’s River Oder north of Old Town and South of Nadodrze. Cathedral Island, though not technically an island, has this name because multiple imposing churches are situated in this incredibly small neighbourhood.

You can reach it by crossing the Sand Bridge and the Tumski Bridge which are tourist attractions in their own right. There aren’t tons to do on these islands but the larger ones have some bars and restaurants. Malt Island is essentially one big park and they all offer lovely views across the water.

There aren’t many hotels on these islands which is why they’re unusual places to stay. But if you can find an apartment or hotel, Wroclaw Old Town is only a few minutes south if you’re walking so you’d be staying in an excellent location.

Nadodrze – Where To Stay in Wroclaw on a Budget

Just north of the Islands and the River Oder is the Nadodrze neighbourhood. This district is only growing more and more popular with travellers as it has everything young people are looking for these days.

It boasts rows of grand 19th-century townhouses and courtyards, lots of huge street art murals, craft cocktail bars, and delicious bakeries. And because it’s not directly next to Old Town, accommodation prices aren’t sky-high which makes it ideal if you want to know where to stay in Wroclaw on a budget.

You won’t find any of Wroclaw’s top landmarks here which is a blessing or a curse depending on your point of view. But you will find nice parks where you can sit and read or enjoy a picnic.

There is a variety of eateries in this neighbourhood including brunch cafes like Zenka, world cuisine spots like Mango Mama Nadodrze, and vegan restaurants like Wilk Syty.

There are, of course, lots of hostels, bed and breakfasts, and budget guesthouses in Nadodrze. Your bank balance will thank you for staying here! Because more locals live in this neighbourhood than some of the others like the Stare Miasto or the Four Temple District, you’ll find apartments available for rent here too.

Grunwald – Best Wroclaw Neighbourhood for Digital Nomads

Poland is a cheap country for many travelling from western Europe, the Americas, and Down Under. If you’re a remote worker or a digital nomad, you might want to make Wroclaw your home base for a month or more.

Grunwald is a small neighbourhood situated to the east of Cathedral Island with the River Oder to the south and is the ideal place for you to stay.

The Grunwald Suspension Bridge and the Peace Bridge make it quick and easy to cross the Oder River into Wroclaw Old Town. But there are some things you can do in this neighbourhood too like visit the Botanical Garden of the University of Wroclaw.

The beautiful Centennial Hall events venue sits in the 100-year-old Japanese-style Szczytnicki Park which is just a few minutes east of this district. There are lots of cafes where you can work with your laptop and cheap eats like Kawiarnia Coffilm canteen and ZaRogiem coffee shop.

The Wroclaw University of Science and Technology have its campuses in this neighbourhood so it’s a popular place for students to live. This means you shouldn’t have a problem finding long-term accommodation like co-living spaces, hostels, and apartments.

Olbin – Where to Stay in Wroclaw to Live Like a Local

Olbin is an up-and-coming neighbourhood to the east of Nadodrze and to the north of Grunwald. It’s a huge, residential district characterised by its Soviet-era apartment buildings, small parks on every block, and amenities you’d want as a local.

While you won’t stumble across many pierogi-serving milk bars, you will find Asian supermarkets, kebab shops, and sushi restaurants.

Olbin is nipping at its cool, older brother’s ankles because it also boasts tons of phenomenal street art murals that stretch across the side of its tall buildings.

You can already see independent cafes like Slodki Chlopak popping up and there are some interesting churches to visit too. There are few hotels in this neighbourhood but plenty of apartments to rent. Opt for one in an old Soviet building to experience what it’s really like for locals to live here!

Poludnie – Where To Stay in Wroclaw With Family

South of Wroclaw Old Town and even further south of the Four Temple District is Poludnie. Despite it sounding quite far from the city centre, it’s actually only 10 minutes away if you’re walking.

This sprawling neighbourhood encompasses Wroclaw’s main train station and all the main bus, train, and tram connections should you want to travel elsewhere in Poland.

Easy access to public transport is one reason why Poludnie is ideal if you want to know where to stay in Wroclaw with family. But there are tons of other reasons too! Poludnie has lots of entertainment options and amenities.

Wroclavia is a huge shopping mall with clothing stores and a cinema. Aquapark Wroclaw is a popular family-friendly water park where you could spend hours. There are also parks and lots of parking lots in case you want to hire a car to transport your brood.

One of the best things about staying in Poludnie is the large selection of accommodation options. There are plenty of chain hotels here so you can use points as well as apartment suites and boutique hotels too.

Żerniki – Where to Stay Near Wroclaw Airport

Have an early flight or a quick layover? Wroclaw is only a bus ride away from the city’s international airport a few kilometres west of the city. If you’d rather stay around here than in Wroclaw Centrum, choose the Zerniki district. It has a train station and is directly next to the airport.

There isn’t much to do in this neighbourhood but it does have a park, a mall, and a few supermarkets. And though there aren’t many options, you’ll still find a hostel, a large chain hotel, and one or two guesthouses in this district.

Added Extra: Areas to Avoid in Wroclaw

Overall, Wroclaw is a very safe city with low levels of crime. Pickpocketing is the largest concern for most tourists and even then it’s not as rampant as it is in larger capital cities on the continent.

The rise in far-right politics has led to growing tensions directed at the LGBTQ+ community but there are no specific Wroclaw neighbourhoods that are inherently more dangerous than others.

Przedmieście Oławskie, a neighbourhood east of Wroclaw Centrum and south of the River Oder, was historically a dangerous neighbourhood. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the city’s low-income residents lived in tenement houses, and crime rates were significantly higher than in other areas.

Today, this is no longer the case and crime rates are average but you might want to stay in a different neighbourhood to be on the safe side.

Szczepin is a large, residential neighbourhood west of Wroclaw Old Town. It’s not unsafe but you might want to avoid staying here simply because it’s far away from Wroclaw’s main attractions and has few bars and restaurants.

It is also nowhere near as beautiful and vibrant as other residential neighbourhoods in the city. There are few hotels in this area anyway but you might be disappointed if you accidentally booked an apartment here.

If you’d like to save it for later, please save it to Pinterest.
