Brașov

Brașov Romania is often considered the best area for tourists visiting Transylvania for the first time. Thanks to good connections via public transportation, Brașov is an excellent base from which to take day trips into the surrounding countryside.

Famous landmarks including Bran Castle, the Rasnov Fortress, and Peles Castle are each less than one hour from Brașov. Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, the Brașov area has something for everyone.

From the medieval walls surrounding the Old Town with its famous Black Church to beautiful mountain resorts like Poiana Brașov, with ski trails, tubing, luging, luxury hotels and restaurants. Tampa Mountain is another popular area to explore in Brașov, with spectacular views over the city.

As one of the largest cities in Transylvania, you’ll have no trouble securing a Brașov hotel during your visit. If you prefer to stay in the countryside, you can also find hotels near Bran Castle Romania. Check out these hotels in Transylvania near Dracula’s Castle.

Cluj-Napoca

Another excellent base for Transylvania day trips is Cluj-Napoca, the “capital” city in Transylvania. This vibrant city of 700,000 people is 30% university students, so there’s a much younger vibe here, as well as a thriving arts and culture scene.

This also means there’s a thriving budget-friendly nightlife scene, which is mostly found along Piezisa Street.

While Cluj has a much more modern and edgy feel than other cities of Transylvania, there are still interesting historic sites as well. Banffy Castle is just 30 minutes outside of Cluj and was occupied from the 14th century until the 1940s by the Banffy family.

Sibiu

Located roughly two hours from both Club and Brașov, Sibiu is a much smaller city in Transylvania. This 12th-century town has retained its medieval center and is filled with colorful homes, historic architecture and lovely public squares.

Split into the upper and lower town and connected by narrow staircases, Sibiu is the perfect size city for travelers to explore, whether you stay here or visit on a day trip.

Several churches and cathedrals in town are worth checking out, and you can get an excellent view out over the city from the Council Tower in the center of town. Of course, everyone wants to see castles in Transylvania. Fortunately, Corvin’s Castle is just 90 minutes by car from Sibiu.

Târgu Mureș

Located roughly between Cluj and Brașov lies Târgu Mureș, on the banks of the Mureș River. This picturesque city receives fewer visitors than other parts of Transylvania, but that’s all the more reason to stay here!

Some of the original town walls are still standing, and the Palace of Culture is a major attraction in Târgu Mureș.

Many smaller, niche museums are also located in Târgu Mureș, including Ethnographic Museum and a butchers’ museum.

Several castles also dot the countryside surrounding Târgu Mureș. The small size and number of attractions make this a good place for those seeking a family-friendly destination in Transylvania.

Alba Iulia

Located in the western part of Transylvania, just 100 kilometers south of Cluj, Alba Iulia is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Transylvania.

Also known as the largest citadel in Romania, Alba Iulia is one of the oldest settlements in the country.

The city is full of historic sites, including churches, museums, and libraries. A tour of the Alba Carolina fortress is often listed as the top thing to do in Alba Iulia.

Bistrița

Bistrița was founded in the 12th century by German immigrants and is one of the northernmost cities in Transylvania.

Situated on the Bistrița River, the village boasts the tallest medieval tower in Romania, built on the site of a 13th-century church. The town also has a 13th-century monastery and a lively town square.

Dracula fans may recognize the name of this town, as it was featured in the novel. For those wondering can you stay the night in Dracula’s Castle, a fun alternative is a stay at the Dracula Castle Hotel outside of Bistrița.

Sighisoara

Nearly halfway between Cluj and Brașov is the Transylvania town of Sighisoara. With roots dating back to the 12th century, there is a ton of history to explore here.

The colorful buildings, cobblestone streets and public squares look straight out of a fairytale.

Then there are the looming spires of churches and the clock tower, as well as some pretty interesting museums. If you want a small, central location to stay in Transylvania, Sighisoara is the perfect choice for you.
