Old Town / St Sebald – Where to stay in Nuremberg for Tourists

Wondering where to stay in Nuremberg for first-timers? Many visitors prefer to stay in the Old Town for their introductory visit to the city, and it is generally considered the best area to stay in Nuremberg.

The Old Town is divided in two by the Pegnitz River, with Altstadt – St Sebald to the north and Altstadt – St Lorenz to the south. Connecting the two sides are multiple arched bridges constructed during different periods throughout history.

Most of the hotels in Nuremberg Old Town are within walking distance from so many incredible attractions. The maze-like cobblestone streets and fascinating mediaeval architecture make simply wandering around the city an enjoyable activity in itself.

If you are interested in where to stay in Nuremberg for Christmas market, you should definitely consider the northern half of the Old Town.

The Nuremberg Christmas Market is one of the oldest and most popular Christmas markets in the world, receiving around two million visitors each year. It is held at the Hauptmarkt, an open-air produce market at the Main Square.

In the northwest corner of the Old Town is the infamous Nuremberg Castle, one of the city’s top attractions. Also referred to as the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg, it was built in the 11th century and offers amazing views of the city centre.

It is surrounded by multiple landscaped gardens, including the Burggarten, the Southern Castle Garden, Bürgermeistergarten, and the Merian-Garten.

You’ll find even more wonderful attractions in the St Sebald part of the Old Town, like the Beautiful Fountain (Schönerbrunnen), the Ship of Fools Fountain (Narrenschiffbrunnen), the Toy Museum, the Bernsteinmuseum, the Deutsches Museum, Albrecht Dürer’s House and more.

Despite being packed with so many great historical things to see and do, it’s considered the quieter half of the Old Town. Only buses run through here, but the entire area is easily walkable.
