Il Campo – Where to stay in Siena for tourists
Piazza del Campo is the central square of Siena and home to much of the activity in the area. Consequently, this is the best area for tourists thanks to the central location and abundance of Siena hotels to choose from.
If you are visiting in February during Carnival or July and August during the Palio di Siena horse races, expect to make reservations far in advance as these popular events draw many tourists to Siena.
Of course, the streets around Il Campo are lined with cafes, gelato shops, restaurants, and souvenir stores. If you only visit one area in Siena, it will be Il Campo.

Aquila – Where to stay in Siena with family
Just next to Il Campo is the area known as Aquila, named after the eagle.
This is where you’ll find the Duomo di Siena, another very popular tourist destination in Siena, a Gothic building that features black and white marble stripes inside and out.
The Duomo also houses works by Donatello, Pisano, and Michelangelo. Aquila is one of Siena’s most walkable neighborhoods, although parking can be difficult due to narrow crowded streets.
There are dozens of restaurants and attractions in Aquila, making it a very family-friendly place to stay.

Giraffa – Where to stay in Siena for foodies
Giraffa, or the Giraffe Contrada, is one of the oldest sections of Siena and the home of the Palio horse races.
This neighborhood, which lies northeast of the center, is a wonderful place to stay near the heart of Siena. A visit to the Museum of the Imperial Contrada of the Giraffa is a great spot to learn about the history of the Palio, with each of the winners on display.
Elsewhere in the district, you can find historic churches, castles, and museums. The district is home to over 100 restaurants, making this a very good place to stay, especially if you like to stroll the streets at leisure.

Torre – Where to stay in Siena for first timers
Southeast of Il Campo is the area called Torre, or Tower. This also happens to be the Jewish Quarter of Siena, offering a different historical perspective than some of the other areas of Siena.
Named for the Tower of Mangia, which butts against Piazza del Campo. Other highlights here include the synagogue of Siena, and more historic architecture to explore through the narrow streets.
The main appeal of staying in Torre is the proximity to the heart of Siena. The neighborhood leads directly into Piazza del Campo, meaning all the best Siena attractions are within walking distance of any Torre accommodation that you choose.

Vico Alto – Where to stay in Siena on a budget
About eight kilometres northwest of Siena is the area of Vico Alto. As it’s a bit removed from the popular tourist attractions of Siena, it’s a good choice to find budget-friendly accommodations.
There are few, if any, modes of public transportation between Vico Alto and Siena, so it is advisable to have a car if staying here.
Since parking is difficult in Siena, this is a good place to stay if you are driving. Vico Alto has a small selection of hotels, restaurants, and shops, but offers a much more suburban experience as opposed to staying in the heart of Siena.
It’s a great choice for long-term stays and those looking to rent an apartment or home to have a more local, residential experience.
