On the outskirts of the city center is the suburban area of Mirje. East of Mirje and just south of the city center is Ljubljana’s oldest suburb, Krakovo. It was once a fishing village on the banks of the Ljubljanica River and has even been called the Montmartre of Ljubljana, thanks to the charming architecture of two-story cottages and the abundance of artists in and around Krakovo. There are numerous restaurants in the area, and a huge open-air market at Vodnik Square. Don’t let the suburb term fool you, this charming village is still just a ten-minute walk from Old Town Ljubljana.

Trnovo is often lumped together with Krakovo, as they are both just south of the city center.
