Mauritius is known for being one of the safest countries in Africa and most of the crimes here are non-violent. There aren’t any areas you should actively avoid in Mauritius because the ones that have a higher crime rate are, logically, the areas with the most people!

These are touristy areas like Grand Bay and the capital of Port Louis, but you shouldn’t avoid these neighbourhoods and towns.

The only places you should avoid are smaller towns and villages that are far away from the main touristy hubs and landmarks.

Sometimes villages have cheaper accommodations and might look pretty but it will be a pain for you to travel in and out of the more built-up areas for restaurants and bars. In most cases, it’s a mistake to book somewhere that doesn’t have a sea view too!

Avoid Moka because it’s inland, relatively small and far away from any of the main activities. La Preneause might look close to Flic en Flac and have some nice accommodations but it’s a longer distance than you might think.

As with Poste de Flacq, it’s just a bit too far away from Belle Mare and taking expensive taxis every time you want to travel could ruin your trip!
