Cotai – Where to stay in Macau for first timers
Cotai is the main street running through the best area of Macau, so staying along the Cotai strip is very similar to staying along the Strip in Las Vegas. This is the best area for tourists and is also where the majority of hotels in Macau are concentrated. If you are looking for luxury, the most luxurious resorts in Macau are also located along Cotai.
Of course, if you are coming to Macau to gamble, you’ll probably choose a casino hotel along the strip, but there are family friendly hotels along Coati as well, with entertainment options for the whole family. If you are deciding where to stay in Macau for nightlife, then the Coati Strip is an excellent choice.

Old Macau is the historic city centre on the Macau Peninsula and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Macau was once a colonial trading port of Portugal and was only returned to China in 1999. Macau City Centre – Where to stay in Macau for tourists
On the Macau Peninsula, the Macau City Centre is the other popular tourist destination with some of the best hotels and resorts in Macau. If you are coming over from Hong Kong by ferry, the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal is here on the Macau Peninsula, making this a great choice for your Macau accommodation.
There is a little bit of everything in Macau City Centre, and Old Macau is also on the Macau Peninsula. Most casinos operate shuttles, so it is easy to get around, and if you want to visit the casinos of Coati, it is about 20 minutes by shuttle bus.

Taipa – Where to stay in Macau for a cultural break
Taipa is the district just north of Coati and the location of the Macau International Airport. Taipa is often referred to as Taipa Village, and it’s a well-preserved Portuguese-style village just minutes from the glamour of the Coati strip. This is a great place to take a break from gambling and learn about the cultural history of Macau, including Portuguese and Chinese influences.
There are hidden gardens scattered throughout, and many authentic restaurants to sample. Some Coati hotels are in walking distance of Taipa, while others will offer a free shuttle. Like Coloane, this is a quieter place to stay that is within easy reach of the best Macau attractions.

Coloane – Where to stay in Macau with Family
Just south of the Cotai area is the very green district of Coloane. If you are wondering where to stay in Macau with family, Coloane is perfect. This lush region is filled with beaches and hiking trails. This is the least developed area of Macau, and there are fewer hotels here, but if you are not looking for gambling or nightlife, but prefer a more scenic and active vacation, then Coloane is a great option.
Amongst the forests, you’ll find a panda pavilion with giant pandas and red pandas. If you like to gamble and partake in the entertainment of Coati, regular public buses run between the two districts.
