Where to Stay in Xian [Best Places to Stay for 2024]

I spent 3 weeks travelling around China and one of the stops I made was in Xian. This is an ancient city with a deep history and some truly unique sights.

Coming from a traveller’s perspective, deciding where to stay in Xian can be a daunting task. So to make it easier for other travellers, I’d like to share my experiences and what I learned about where to stay in Xian with you all.

I spoke with many travellers while I was there and I heard a lot of stories about places that were very cheap but not very trustworthy or safe.

On the other hand, there were also places that people felt provided more authority and trustworthiness, but those places were usually more expensive.

The capital of the Shaanxi province of Central China, Xi’an has a rich history going back more then 3,000 years, and today is an important economic and industrial hub, with many cultural and educational offerings.

Xi’an is also a major transportation hub, making access to other parts of China very easy, whether you prefer to travel by plane, train or bus. One of the biggest tourist attractions in Xi’an are the terracotta warriors, about 40 kilometers from Xi’an city center.

The platoons of clay soldiers were only discovered in the 1970’s, and the site features over 7000 warriors, 600 horses and 100 chariots.

Xi’an City Center – Where to stay in Xian as a tourist

For first-time visitors to Xi’an, the city center is a great place to stay. You’ll have easy access to the best attractions of Xi’an, as well as public transportation to outlying areas.

There are many Xi’an hotels and restaurants here to host travelers in Xi’an.

Some of the attractions in this district include the Bell Tower of Xi’an and the Drum Tower, some of the most famous landmarks of the city, dating back to 1384, just after the ancient city wall was built. The Muslim quarter here is home to the Great Mosque and excellent street food.

Xincheng District – Where to stay in Xian with family

Just east of Xi’an city center, is the central residential area of Xincheng. The proximity to all of Xi’an’s main attractions and quiet atmosphere make this a great place to stay, especially for those visiting China with children.

Xincheng Plaza is a prime shopping destination, and nearby Renmin Square is surrounded by courtyards and gardens, making this an ideal place to relax or go for a stroll.

Two metro stations make other areas of Xi’an areas very accessible, and you’ll find many hotel types here, from luxury hotels to hostels.

Yanta District – Best part of Xian to stay on a budget

Yanta is another popular place to stay in Xi’an. Just south of the city center, this area has many historic and cultural attractions.

This is where you’ll find the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, an imposing Buddhist pagoda built during the Tang dynasty in 652.

Nearby, the Shaanxi History Museum is one of the largest state museums in China. With nearly 400,000 pieces of art and artifacts, the museum is a great place to learn about the dynasties of ancient China.

Weiyang – Where to stay in Xian for relaxation

One of the main business districts of Xi’an is Weiyang, just north of the city center.

As a business hub, there are many hotels in this area, and there are several subway stations for easy access to other parts of Xi’an. The Weiyang Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Weiyang Lake Amusement Park is a fun place to spend an afternoon, as is the Chanba National Wetland Park, a great spot for bird watching and nature.

The Daming Palace was once the royal residence of the Tang dynasty, and today is a national heritage site of China.

Lintong District –Where to stay in Xian to see the Terracotta Warriors

If you are visiting this region specifically to see the terracotta warriors, they are located in the Lintong District, 35 kilometers from Xi’an city center.

To see them, visit the Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum. The Lintong Museum gives additional insight into the area. For nature, the Lishan National Forest Park is nearby.

Due to the popularity of the terracotta warriors, there are many hotels to choose from in this district.
