My first visit to Salzburg, will be a memory I always look back on fondly. The moment I stepped into the Old Town, I felt like I was transported back in time. The cobblestone streets, the charming buildings, and the sound of music lingering in the air—it was like stepping into a fairy tale.

Over the course of three days, I explored every corner of the city, soaking in its history. From the Hohensalzburg Fortress overlooking the city to the Mirabell Gardens, every moment was a new discovery.

But what truly captured my heart were the hidden beer gardens scattered throughout the city. Sitting under the shade of a chestnut tree, sipping on a cold beer, and watching the world go by—those were the moments I’ll never forget.

As I wandered through the streets, enjoying local delicacies like Mozartkugel chocolates and hearty schnitzel, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of belonging. Salzburg wasn’t just a city; it was a place where history and modernity intertwined seamlessly.

Now, whenever someone asks me about Salzburg, I can’t help but smile. It’s not just a destination; it’s a journey through time, filled with unforgettable experiences and cherished memories.

There’s much to see in the city, and while 72 hours in Salzburg seems rushed, I will share how you can maximise your time there. Follow this three-day itinerary to make the most of your visit and create lasting memories in this enchanting Austrian city.

Visit the Salzburg Cathedral and Kollegienkirhce

Going on a sunset hike on Kapuzinerberg is a must-do experience in Salzburg and is best done in the afternoon, right before the sunsets. 

This scenic hill offers trails that wind through lush greenery and stunning panoramic views. The hike is generally easy, beginner-friendly, and takes 2 to 3 hours.

Just make sure to choose one of the well-marked trails so you can enjoy a leisurely hike to the summit, where you can find a peaceful spot to witness the beauty of the sunset.

As you ascend, the cityscape transforms, and you will be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of Salzburg’s spires, the Salzach River, and the surrounding mountains. 

Day 2 in Salzburg 

Early morning walk at Schloss Leopoldskron

Schloss Leopoldskron is a palace near Salzburg’s city centre, offering a picturesque view of the lake and parkland. So, what better way to enjoy your second morning in Salzburg than to go for an early morning walk here? 

You can take it slow and enjoy the tranquillity of the place while the crowd is still a few. While exploiting the trails and the lush greenery in the area, this is also your chance to check out the elegant palace and learn about its history. 

In addition, you can also find local restaurants and food stalls in the area where you can grab a quick bite for breakfast before you freshen up and proceed with your second-day tour in Salzburg.

Visit the Mirabell Palace and Gardens

One of the most famous filming locations of the Sound of Music was at Mirabell Palace and Gardens. A visit to Salzburg would only be complete with seeing this UNESCO World Heritage site. 

This iconic landmark is known for its meticulously manicured gardens, featuring geometrically shaped flower beds, sculptures, and fountains.

Trek up the Capuchin Monastery

Now that you have gotten a good meal, it’s time to use that energy for something more exciting! Capuchin Monastery is at the highest point of Salzburg, so if you want to get a great view of the city from above, this is the place to be.

Just a few steps away from the Saint Sebastian church, the peaceful hill of Capuchin is located. You’ll just need to follow the trail leading you to various viewpoints. 

Once you reach the monastery, take some time to explore the grounds and visit the monastery church, adorned with beautiful frescoes and a tranquil ambience.

You also have the choice to continue farther uphill and see Saint Francis Fortress, a former watchtower and now a restaurant serving Austrian cuisine.

Day 3 in Salzburg

Since you have already explored the whole of Salzburg and its major attractions, spend your day three touring around a few towns near Salzburg. You’ll need to leave early for this, but it will be worth it!

Your first stop will be at Mondsee, a picturesque town outside Salzburg. It’s bigger and a bit more developed and is known for its stunning lake and captivating scenery.

Once you arrive, you can enjoy the city’s serenity and immerse yourself in another great city in Austria. 

Moreover, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Mondsee Cathedral, the wedding church from The Sound of Music.

Explore St. Gilgen

After exploring Mondsee, go on a scenic drive to St. Gilgen, a charming lakeside village situated on the shores of Lake Wolfgang.
