Western Australia’s capital city of Perth is most famous for being the “most isolated city in the world,” with the Indian Ocean on one side, and the Australian Outback on the other.

The nearest large city is Adelaide, over 2,000 kilometers away. Despite the remote location and isolation, this city of 1.4 million residents is a cosmopolitan gem in the rough, and a great jumping off point for adventures in the Outback or a Rottnest Island tour.

Perth City / CBD – Where to stay in Perth for tourists

The best area to stay in Perth for tourists is the Central Business District. Staying in Perth City Centre means you’ll be closest to the main attractions and have the most Perth hotels to choose from. You can take a train or bus to various points around the city and to a few suburbs.

If you plan to take any tours while visiting Perth, the majority of tour buses leave from the Perth hotels in the Central Business District.

The only drawback to staying in the CBD is if you plan to travel around by car. Parking is hard to find, and expensive once you do, so using public transportation is the best option if you stay in Perth city centre.

Northbridge – Where to stay in Perth for foodies

Adjacent to Perth’s CBD is Northbridge, the nightlife hub of the city. Northbridge is also a multicultural melting pot, with many nationalities represented. For tourists, this translates to tasty food from many cuisines.

William Street is the main destination of Northbridge, and where you’ll find the majority of cocktail lounges and trendy boutiques.

In January, the Fringe World Festival moves into Perth, and many Northbridge lounges host festival acts. From Northbridge, you can easily walk over to the CBD and enjoy the city centre as well.

West Perth – Best location to stay in Perth

Once an upscale suburb of Perth, today this area is largely occupied by office buildings and high-rise apartments.

Hay Street offers a wide selection of food and drinks, and shopping options. Some Perth attractions located in West Perth include the Perth Observatory, the Parliament House and Solidarity Park.

Kings Park and Botanic Garden is also located in West Perth, and is a lovely place to spend the afternoon.

You will still be in walking distance of the CBD, access to public transportation, and a unique selection of places to eat and drink.

South Perth – Where to stay in Perth for family

Just across the Swan River from Perth CBD is the district of South Perth. Parking is more plentiful if you are driving a car, and you will still have easy access to the attractions of downtown.

From South Perth, access to CBD is via a quick ferry ride; the ferries are inexpensive and run frequently.

Photographers will find the best skyline view of Perth from South Perth, and families will enjoy a visit to the Perth Zoo located here.

If you want to know where to stay in Perth with family, South Perth is an excellent option, for it’s proximity to attractions, but slightly quieter atmosphere.

Burswood – Where to stay in Perth for relaxation

Burswood is another great place for tourists to stay in Perth. There is no shortage of Perth hotels in the area, as well as endless entertainment options.

Crown Perth is a modern hotel and casino, in an iconic pyramid building set on the Swan River.

You’ll also find public golf courses, entertainment complexes and serene public gardens. Sports fan are drawn to Burswood, as it’s the home of the State Tennis Centre, Perth Stadium and the Belmont Park Racetrack.

From Burswood, access to the CBD is very easy via public transportation.

Fremantle – Best places to stay in Perth near beach

The port town, often called “Freo,” is a bohemian district with a fun mix of culture and history. If you are looking for an alternative to the tourists’ path of Perth, Fremantle is a great choice.

There are quirky cafes, eclectic restaurants, a lively music scene and handmade craft souvenirs.

If you stay in Fremantle, day trips to Perth are easy and there are a few options. For the scenic route, you can take a Swan River cruise to Perth CBD, or there are frequent buses and trains to Perth, for the 30-minute trip.

There are many accommodation options in Fremantle, and it’s a very walkable city, making it the best suburb to stay in Perth for repeat visitors.

Subiaco – Where to stay in Perth on a Budget

The posh neighborhood of West Perth is Subiaco. The area is full of coffee shops, restaurants and pubs.

Shoppers will love the designer boutiques, beauty salons and art galleries. Rokeby Street is the heart of Subiaco, with several merchants lining the street.

Some notable attractions in Subiaco include Domain Stadium, Mueller Park, the Regal Theatre and the Subiaco Arts Centre.

Swan Valley – Where to stay near Perth for wine lovers

If you are coming to the Perth region for the abundant vineyards and tasting rooms, you may want to stay in the Swan Valley area.

Only 30 minutes drive from Perth, Swan Valley is the oldest wine region of Western Australia.

To meet the demands of wine tourism, Swan Valley also offers breweries and distilleries, cafes and restaurants, markets, galleries and workshops.

Of course, you can book Swan Valley tours directly from Perth, but if you have no interest in the city, then you may just enjoy staying in Swan Valley.
