Jakarta is the largest city and capital of Indonesia. While many travelers to Indonesia head to the beaches and temples of Bali, you may also decide to spend some time in the capital city before ending your Indonesian vacation. If that’s the case, we’ve rounded up some areas of the city to help you decide where to stay in Jakarta. Traffic is notoriously bad in Jakarta, and public transportation isn’t as great as other cities, so you should consider what you plan to see in Jakarta and stay nearby. That said, Uber and taxis are relatively cheap if you need them.

Kemang is a neighborhood in South Jakarta with something for everyone. Kemang is largely a residential area, and very popular with expats as there are several international schools in the area. A healthy expat population also means there are many great bars, cafes, restaurants, brunch spots and shopping opportunities. Kemang is considered one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Jakarta, with dozens of fashion boutiques to choose from. If you’re looking for all-night dancing, Kemang has a few options, but tends to be one of the quieter neighborhoods as far as nightlife goes.

Menteng is another great place to stay in Jakarta. Once a colonial suburb, this area has merged into the city and is now the administrative center. While it is firmly in the center of Jakarta, you can still find tree-lined streets and some of Jakarta’s best parks. Menteng is also a great destination for shopping, with one of Jakarta’s most exclusive shopping malls, as well as the cities most popular vintage market. There are many hotels in this area, from budget to luxury options.

SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District)
For the best proximity to Jakarta’s nightclubs, you’ll want to stay in the Central Business District, or SCBD. On the south edge of Jakarta, SCBD has a high concentration of office buildings, condominiums, shopping, entertainment and hotels. Jakarta’s nightclub scene is legendary, so plan ahead which clubs you want to hit and choose a hotel that’s nearby. There’s many hotels to choose from, whether you want a posh five-star or a budget hostel. By day, SCBD is mostly a business district, so you’ll have a few options for dining and shopping, but will likely branch out to other neighborhoods to explore.
