Travel to Montenegro

Montenegro Destination

With neighboring Croatia becoming more and more popular with tourists and cruise ships, travelers are spilling into Montenegro, looking for the next best destination.

The name means “Black Mountain” and the Adriatic coastline is set against a dramatic backdrop of mountains.

Cities like Kotor and Podgorica offer nightlife and historic sights, while the interior of the country has several national parks.

Currency: Montenegro uses the Euro as their currency which can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Montenegro, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.

Power Points: Most power points are the same as most other European power points (2 circular prongs). Obviously I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter especially for non Europeans.

Official Language: The official language of Montenegro is Montenegrin, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and Albanian are also languages spoken in Montenegro.

Health: There only major health concern in Montenegro tick-borne encephalitis in forests and fields. I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.

Drinking Tap Water: The tap water is generally safe to drink, however, if you are unsure, make sure to ask your hotel receptionist or host.

Visa: Most countries don’t require a visa for short stays, to visit Montenegro.

Popular foods:
Njegusi prosciutto (Montenegro’s national dish, dried pork).
Cevapi (grilled sausages served with flatbread and sliced onions).
Burek (phyllo dough pastry filled with ingredients, such as cottage cheese, spinach, and potatoes).
Rastan (collard greens with potato and pork and sausages).

When to go: The months of May through October are ideal for travel to Montenegro. However, be advised that the beaches are crowded and it becomes very hot in July and August. It is therefore best to travel to the mountains at that time of year. Skiers should go on vacation between January and March.
