Travel to Cambodia

Cambodia Destination

Despite a dark history as recently as the 1970s, this Southeast Asian country is known for friendly locals and stunning temples. Most travelers visit Siem Reap, home of the Angkor Archaeological Complex.

Travelers who choose to wander beyond the temples will visit the capital city of Phnom Penh, a hub of French Colonial and Khmer influences. Travelers wanting a beach vacation will head to Sihanoukville on the Gulf of Thailand.

QUICK CAMBODIA FACTS

Currency: Cambodian Riel can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Cambodia, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.

Power Points: In Cambodia, there are 3 different types of power points, 2 vertical plugs with 2 small holes (similar to the USA plugs), the European 2 circular plug and the UK 3 prong plug point. Obviously given the multiple plug points, I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter especially for non Europeans.

Official Language: The official language of Cambodia is Khmer, however, in most tourist areas, the locals generally speak English.

Health: There are a few health concerns in Cambodia for travellers. Insect-borne diseases such as dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis are widespread in Cambodia. Malaria is also common in some regions, especially along the borders in mountain regions.
I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.

Drinking Tap Water: The tap water is generally safe to drink, its recommended to drink bottled water as the tap water does not taste very nice.

Visa: Tourists can apply for an e-visa online or get a tourist visa on arrival. These are valid for 30 days.

Popular foods:
Amok trey (fragrant and spicy coconut fish curry).
Num banh chok (Noddle dish usually had for breakfast).
Samlar kari (Cambodian chicken curry).
Yaohon (Cambodian hot pot that contains a variety of vegetables, meat, and seafood).

When to go: The best months to visit Cambodia are from October through November and from May through June when you’ll notice less tourists, less humidity, and drier weather all around.
