Old French Quarter – Where to stay in Siem Reap for First Timers

The heart of Siem Reap is the Old French Quarter, the best area for tourists visiting Siem Reap for the first time. The central location means you can easily reach the best areas of Siem Reap for nightlife, shopping, and dining.

The French Quarter also has a wide range of Siem Reap accommodation including backpacker hostels and five-star hotels. Attractions in this neighborhood include the Royal Residence and the Angkor National Museum.

In Siem Reap’s Old French Quarter, on Sivatha Boulevard, you may find beautiful colonial structures that are still standing tall and in great condition. Despite recent changes, these structures continue to be a highlight of the neighbourhood.

Sivatha Boulevard, Siem Reap’s major thoroughfare, is renowned for its variety of luxury accommodations. Along with numerous upscale eateries, stylish stores, and boutiques, the area also houses the renowned Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC) Angkor Restaurant.

The French Quarter is well-connected to other areas of Siem Reap, and an inexpensive tuk-tuk ride will take you almost anywhere in the city. If you are joining any Siem Reap tours, they often leave from the center of the city.

While you’re here, don’t miss Kandal Village, an up and coming area just south of the French Quarter that is filled with unique shops and boutiques.

In Siem Reap, Cambodia, there is a royal villa called The Royal Residence. For his visits to Siem Reap, the King of Cambodia uses it as his official palace. On the other side of Road 6 is where The Royal Residence is situated.

Although it isn’t accessible to the general public, you can see the building’s front and use it as a backdrop for some Instagram photos.

The collections at the Angkor National Museum, which primarily date from the Khmer Empire’s Angkor period between the ninth and fourteenth centuries, are devoted to the collection, preservation, and presentation of Angkorian artifacts. They also aim to inform and educate visitors about the art and culture of Khmer civilization.

Old Market – Where to stay in Siem Reap for Nightlife

Just next to the French Quarter is the Old Market area of Siem Reap. Like the French Quarter, this Siem Reap neighborhood enjoys a central location that is perfect for exploring different areas of the city.

If you’re seeking for traditional Cambodian apparel, souvenirs, hand-carved ornaments, or furniture, Siem Reap Old Market, also known as Phsar Chas, is a terrific place to go. The main market area for both locals and visitors is directly in the centre of Siem Reap.

Be prepared to smell some odd things as you browse around the unique food stalls at this lively market. There are several cafes, pubs, and restaurants in the area of the ancient market where you may unwind after a day of shopping.

This is also where you’ll find the famous “Pub Street” of Siem Reap, making this the best place to stay in Siem Reap if you are looking for plenty of nightlife options.  Pub Street, or Street 08, got its nickname from the dozens of bars lined up and down the street.

The surrounding streets are equally lively, with shops, restaurants, and street vendors. Below are a list of the best hotel near pub street in Siem Reap.

Wat Damnak is Siem Reap’s largest pagoda and the surrounding area is a cultural hub of the city. Just across the Siem Reap river from Old Market, Wat Damnak is conveniently located and full of interesting things to do.

There’s a bustling new restaurant scene here, with some of Siem Reap’s most innovative dining options. If you want to partake in the nightlife of Pub Street, but prefer a quiet atmosphere to get some sleep at night, then Wat Damnak is the perfect spot for you.

Sok San Road – Where to stay in Siem Reap on a Budget

Starting at the Siem Reap Night Market and heading west, Sok San Road extends out into some quieter areas that are perfect for anyone seeking a family-friendly central location to stay in Siem Reap.

With plenty of hotels and restaurants in this area, the further you get from the Old Market neighborhood, the more budget-friendly accommodations you will find. Of course, most Siem Reap accommodation is budget-friendly, which is one reason it’s such a popular destination!

There are however some areas of Sok San Road that’s similar to Bangla road in Phuket, where there is a little entertainment (mainly for men…. if you get what I’m saying). I wouldn’t let this put you off though, it’s still a nice area and still very family friendly.

The Angkor Night Market, one of Siem Reap’s most well-known shopping destinations, has approximately 200 bamboo tents where local communities offer a variety of apparel and handicrafts.

This outdoor market, which is close to Sok San Road, was started in 2007 with the goal of preserving traditional Khmer handicrafts and bettering the lives of the Khmer people.

There will be a tonne of unique products available, like shadow puppets, intricate stone sculptures, and silk paintings that are decorated with brass or silver.

The “Angkor Recycled” market, which provides a wide selection of bags, wallets, purses, and pouches produced from recycled materials, is a fantastic choice for eco-friendly products.

Charles de Gaulle Road – Where to stay Siem Reap near Angkor Wat

Charles de Gaulle Boulevard leads directly to the Angkor Wat temples from the Royal Residence.

This is the best location to stay in Siem Reap for tourists who are primarily interested in exploring the temples and less interested in the nightlife of downtown Siem Reap.

Although, transportation is inexpensive, so you can still enjoy Pub Street activities!

Charles de Gaulle Boulevard is lined with some of the nicer resorts of Siem Reap, and if you are hoping to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat, staying along Charles de Gaulle Road will give you a few extra minutes of precious sleep as you will be near the entrance gate of the temple complex.

If you want to know where to stay in Siem Reap near Angkor Wat, this is as close as you can get.

The biggest religious structure in the world, Angkor Wat is a collection of temples in Cambodia that spans a site area of 162.6 hectares.

The beautiful remnants of the several capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the ninth to the fifteenth century, can be found in Angkor Archaeological Park.

They include the well-known Angkor Wat Temple and the Bayon Temple in Angkor Thom, which is decorated with innumerable sculptures.
