Where To Go in Jamaica on Your Honeymoon

Jamaica measures 10,991 km² and it is the third-largest Caribbean island. It’s split into three regions: Cornwall county to the west, Middlesex county in the centre, and Surrey county to the east.

Most of the main cities are on the coastlines, including Kingston which is Jamaica’s capital city. Three of the best honeymoon destinations in Jamaica are the cities of Montego Bay (Cornwall County), Ocho Rios (Middlesex County) and Negril (Cornwall County).

Montego Bay

Apologies in advance if you get Kokomo by The Beach Boys stuck in your head, but Montego Bay is probably one of the more popular destinations in Jamaica. It is a main cruise ship port so there are a lot of day-trippers, golf courses, and beach resorts.

Ocho Rios

Once a small fishing village, Ocho Rios is almost as large and popular as Montego Bay thanks to its own popular cruise port.

There are also lots of ideal Jamaica honeymoon resorts and beaches in this city but what sets it apart from Montego Bay is the remoteness. While it’s a big city, it’s surrounded by rainforests, rivers, and waterfalls.

Negril

Negril is much smaller than Montego Bay and Ocho Rios so it’s perfect if you want to stay in an all-inclusive luxury resort for your honeymoon in a quieter area.

There’s still plenty to do! The Negril Seven Mile Beach is arguably the best beach in the country with lots of coral reefs. And there are also lots of restaurants, bars, and hotels so there are plenty of things to do here.

Important Information on Jamaica for Your Honeymoon

Jamaica’s official language is English, though the majority of the population speaks Jamaican Patois. Tap water in Jamaica is safe to drink unless you’re staying in a remote cabin, which is unlikely since you’re travelling on your honeymoon!

Jamaica’s currency is the Jamaican dollar (JMD) though some establishments will accept US dollar (USD). Small businesses and vendors will only accept cash though larger establishments like hotels will accept card payments. On a luxury trip, expect to spend around 30,000 JMD ($200 USD) per day on excursions, transport, eating out, and other incidentals.

There are three international airports in Jamaica: Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, and Ian Fleming International Airport in Ocho Rios. Most people on their honeymoon fly into Sangster International Airport rather than Manley International Airport.

The best time to go Jamaica honeymooning is in the ‘winter’ period from November to April. Temperatures are around 27°C (80°F) and if you don’t mind the crowds, it’s perfect.

You can get around Jamaica by bus, car, or taxi. If you do hire a car, keep in mind that they drive on the left in Jamaica. But it might not be the best way to get around because the roads aren’t maintained and they’re extremely narrow and windy.

Public buses are a good option if you want to save money, or you can organise bus excursions with your hotel. ‘Route’ or local taxis are cheaper than tourist taxis though they are difficult to arrange and you may have to share the ride.

Jamaica is a relatively safe country as long as you stay in the popular, well-touristed areas. Never walk around at night alone, keep your belongings with you or in a secure place, and be wary of strangers.
