Beach or Tropical Destinations: Pack Light, Pack Right

Ah, the beach—a paradise of sun, sand, and all things laid-back. But before you start dreaming of cocktails by the ocean, let’s talk about what you actually need to bring. Spoiler alert: It’s not as much as you think!

1. Sunscreen (SPF 50, Baby!)

Trust me, you’ll thank me for this one. I learned the hard way on a solo trip to Thailand when I forgot to reapply. The sunburn was so bad I could barely move the next day. Pack sunscreen, and don’t skimp on the SPF. Your future self (and your skin) will be forever grateful.

2. Lightweight Clothes

Stick to airy, light fabrics like cotton or linen—think shorts, tank tops, and a breezy dress or two. Don’t forget a good swimsuit (or two). And remember, less is more! I used to overpack outfits for every day of a beach trip, but now I just bring a few pieces I can mix and match.

3. Flip Flops (and One Nice Pair of Shoes)

Flip flops are a beach essential, but don’t forget to pack one pair of nicer sandals or casual shoes for those moments when you want to dress up a bit. I usually end up wearing my comfy sandals everywhere—dinner, exploring, you name it! I will also generally wear a pair of sneakers on the plane, which is great for short hikes or days where I’m doing a lot of walking.

4. Sunglasses and a Hat

Make sure to stay sun-smart. A wide-brimmed hat and a good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses are non-negotiable. Not only do they keep you from frying in the sun, but they also add a bit of style (because why not?).

5. Sarong or Cover-Up

I never travel to beach destinations without a lightweight sarong. It works as a towel, a beach cover-up, and even a makeshift blanket when the sun goes down. Plus, it’s super light and doesn’t take up much room in your bag.

6. Portable Charger

This might seem random, but it’s a lifesaver. Whether you’re using your phone for navigation, taking photos, or streaming music while lounging on the beach, you’ll want a portable charger. I’ve been caught out with a dead phone way too many times—never again!

Cold or Snowy Destinations: Stay Warm, Stay Stylish

Now, packing for snowy destinations is a whole different beast. There’s a fine line between being prepared and turning into a walking coat rack. So here’s how to nail it without overpacking.

1. Layer Up!

Layers are your best friend in cold climates. On my solo trip to Iceland, I learned this after going from warm indoor cafes to freezing outdoor landscapes. Start with thermal under-layers (trust me, they’re worth it), then add a fleece or sweater, and finish with a good, water-resistant jacket.

2. Waterproof Everything

Snow is beautiful…until it melts and soaks through your clothes. Waterproof boots, a waterproof jacket, and maybe even water-resistant gloves are must-haves. I once had to walk through slushy streets in Berlin with soaked shoes, and let me tell you, it was not fun – I was miserable!

3. Comfy, Sturdy Boots

When it’s cold, the last thing you want is to be slipping around in the snow. Get yourself some comfy boots with good grip. I prefer ankle boots because they’re versatile enough for walking around town and keeping your feet warm.

4. Warm Accessories

Don’t forget a beanie, scarf, and gloves. These little accessories go a long way in keeping you toasty. I always pack a couple of beanies because they don’t take up much space and add a little flair to your winter wardrobe. Plus, who doesn’t love a cute beanie moment?

5. Moisturizer and Lip Balm

Cold air dries everything out—skin, lips, you name it. I always have a heavy-duty moisturiser and lip balm handy. Nothing ruins a good snow day faster than chapped lips and dry skin!

6. Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is just as important in cold weather as it is in the heat. Bring a reusable water bottle (preferably insulated) to keep your drinks warm or cold, depending on what you need. It’s a simple way to make sure you’re taking care of yourself on the road.

All Destinations: The Universal Must-Haves

Whether you’re chilling at the beach or conquering a snowy mountaintop, there are a few things every solo traveller should always have in their bag.

1. First Aid Kit

I’m not saying you need to carry a full pharmacy, but a small first aid kit with basics like band-aids, painkillers, and antiseptic cream will do the trick. I once got a blister the size of a coin on a hike in Norway and was so glad I had some band-aids on hand.

2. Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is a must. I never leave home without it, and neither should you. It gives peace of mind, knowing you’re covered in case of emergencies—especially when you’re traveling solo.

3. Backpack or Day Bag

A good day bag is essential for carrying your daily stuff—water bottle, snacks, phone, camera, etc. I always opt for something small but sturdy enough to fit everything I need while out exploring.

4. Passport Copies and Travel Documents

Always have a copy of your passport and important documents. I keep digital copies on my phone and a physical copy stashed in my bag—just in case. Trust me, you don’t want to get caught without these if something goes missing!

Final thoughts

Whether you’re soaking up the sun or hitting the slopes, packing smart can make your solo travel experience so much easier. Focus on the essentials, layer up when it’s cold, and stay light when it’s hot. You’ve got this! And hey, if you do forget something, it’s not the end of the world—you can always grab it at your destination. Now go pack like a pro, and enjoy the adventure!
