When I first came to South East Asia aged 22 backpacking with my boyfriend at the time, I had no idea that just over a year later I would be moving there! Just over a year later, single and solo I moved to Thailand for my first teaching job abroad – and it was the best thing that ever happened to me!
I always say that Thailand was the making of me. After around 2 weeks after a work induction and finding a new apartment, I was informed that I had 10 days off as my first holiday. I remember thinking that I didn’t even want a holiday, I didn’t have any friends…who would I go with? Then I told myself to stop being scared and I booked myself into a beach bungalow in Koh Chang for 10 days, contacting a local dive shop to go scuba diving.
On my first night there, I got chatting to 2 solo backpackers in a beach restaurant and we made friends and had a wonderful 10 days of partying alternating with dive days; diving wrecks and coral reefs around Koh Chang and the national park there.
It’s 10 years later and one of those friends just visited me again in Bangkok! If you have the fire to do something, but you are holding back because you are scared, it’s okay, and you can still do those things anyway!

My first time in East Africa was during my gap year. I volunteered at an orphanage. I particularly remember my host family asking me if I liked bananas. I said yes, and was served a special dish that didn’t look like bananas, but like a stew. I tasted it and grimaced. Not at all what I expected. I’d never heard of cooked bananas, a dish called Ndizi na nyama. This dish uses plantains. I didn’t like it.
Still, I tried it when it was made by friends or the orphanage where I worked. And sometimes I liked it when they used a certain type of plantain.
Thinking back to this story, I can often relate that to many moments in my travels. I didn’t say I didn’t like it and I would never try it again. I stayed open to it. How often does that apply to other factors in my life? Prejudices about strangers I just met. New things I tried. Trying to box everything in too quickly can end up keeping the mind closed.
Does this apply to your solo travel experience? Maybe you’ve tried solo travel, but it’s not for you? Maybe you haven’t tried the right way for you. There are so many ways to travel. Through volunteer work, house sitting, city trips, nature escapes, cultural trips, camping trips, and so much more. Many of these experiences also give you the opportunity to meet others and connect with locals.

I remember sitting at the airport, after traveling solo for three and a half months, looking out the windows and wondering: “What now?”.
And in an instant, it hit me to remind me that I had the courage to leave behind my ordinary 9-5 life and explore the uncharted territories that few dare to talk about.
Looking back to my solo trip, I realized I had learned a new language, discovered places I never imagined could exist, and experienced the beauty of the mountains, the depths of the ocean, the vastness of deserts, and the vibrancy of both bustling cities and quiet, remote towns. I immersed myself in diverse cultures and customs, transforming strangers into lasting friendships.
I could have never imagined the power and the profound impact of traveling alone, far from home, and the familiar comforts I’ve grown up with. Embracing this new way of seeing the world has taught me invaluable lessons, revealing that even a short time away can lead to remarkable personal growth. Set yourself on the right path!
