Ciutadella – Where to stay in Menorca for tourists
At the western end of the island, Ciutadella de Menorca is a port city and arrival point for ferries coming from Barcelona. Ciutadella is known for a historic Old Town area, with an interesting mix of Baroque, Gothic and Roman architecture. The harbor area is particularly picturesque, with several Menorca hotels just a short walk away.
There are no Menorca beaches directly in Cuitadella, but they are just a short bus ride away. This makes Ciutadella the best area for tourists who are looking for a cultural experience beyond the beach hotels and resorts. As an added bonus, some of the best beach resorts in Menorca Spain are located along the coast just south of Ciutadella.

Mahón – Where to stay in Menorca on a budget
Another city option is to stay in Mahón, the capital of Menorca. Mahon Menorca is sometimes just called Maó and is connected by ferry to Valencia, Barcelona and Palma, Mallorca. Much like Ciutadella, Mahón has a harbor area and an Old Town, as well as unique architecture from various periods of history.
As the island is only 40 minutes across, you can easily visit any of the Menorca beaches, or Ciutadella, on a day trip from Mahón. Mahón has more transit connections than Ciutadella so if you do not plan to rent a car in Menorca, then this can be the deciding factor for you. This is also the best area for tourists who are looking for a budget-friendly place to stay in Menorca.

Es Castell – Where to stay in Menorca for couples
Just outside Mahón is the small village of Es Castell. Originally a British port, it was once called Georgetown and retains a distinct British Colonial feel. This is another “urban” destination with no beach resorts in town, however, several beach areas are located nearby.
With a ten-minute trip to Mahón, you can transfer to another bus to almost anywhere on the island. For a closer option, you can walk 15 minutes to Cala Padera, a rocky swimming hole with a wooden platform for sunbathing. Thanks to the laidback atmosphere and good location, this one of Menorca’s ideal couple holiday destinations.

Fornells – Where to stay in Menorca for Foodies
Along the northern coast of Menorca Spain is another small fishing village that is one of the best places to stay in Menorca for couples. This is a prime destination for foodies, as the number of restaurants is quite high for the size of the village. Lobster stew is the local specialty, and fresh seafood is a must when staying in Menorca.
It is also said to be the best spot on the island for sailing and wind-surfing, so you can easily work off all the delicious meals. A small, protected beach makes Fornells a great choice for where to stay in Menorca for families as well. Nearby Playa de Fornells is also a family-friendly beach area.

Serpentona – Where to stay in Menorca with kids
Along the southern coast of Menorca is Serpentona and nearby Cala Galdana, one of the most popular resorts in Menorca. Some of the best beaches in Menorca are located in this part of the island, making it a popular holiday destination. Here, the Algandar River empties from the Algandar Gorge into the sea, leaving dramatic cliffs around the area, and separating Serpentona and Cala Galdana.
This area offers a nice mix of family-friendly hotels and dining, as well as budget-friendly rentals. If you are visiting Menorca with kids, you can’t miss the Tobagan restaurant, which features waterslides and miniature golf!

Ferreries is located in the center of the island, and is the highest point on Menorca, offering fantastic views in every direction. If you want to plan a vacation that visits every beach on Menorca, then staying in this central location is a good option as you can head in a different direction each day.
One of the most popular beaches near Ferreries is Cala Macarella, one of the most pristine bays on the island, which you can reach by bus, car or on foot from Cala Galdana.

Es Mercadal – Where to stay in Menorca for a village experience
Another inland place to stay in Menorca is Es Mercadal. With whitewashed buildings, you may think you’ve taken a wrong turn and ended up in Greece. This village is mostly untouched by tourism and is a great way to experience small village life on the island.
You can climb the nearby El Toro Mountain to visit the mountaintop Franciscan church. The village also seems to have a disproportionate number of bakeries and pastry shops, making it the perfect destination for travelers with a sweet tooth!

Sant Lluis – Where to stay in Menorca for a low key trip
In the southeast corner of the island is the area known as Sant Lluis, a lively village surrounded by beautiful beaches. Some of the best coves on the island can be found along the coastline around Sant Lluis.
While the village has many ongoing activities, such as summer concerts, many accommodation choices in this region are country homes and estates. This is a great Menorca location if you are looking for a low-key vacation and plan to have a rental car to get around.
