Where to stay in Linz [Best Places to Stay for 2024]
Linz is a city of development and innovation. Dubbed the “City of Smart Tourism”, Linz has evolved from an old industrial town into a forward-thinking spearheader of culture, technology, and tourism in Austria. One of many up-and-coming tourist destinations, read on for the best places to stay in Linz, Austria.
The capital of ‘Upper Austria’ and the third largest city in the country, Linz often goes under the radar when you think about travelling Europe, but this city is not to be missed. It has an Old Town, as well as modern areas, and one of the largest main squares in Central Europe.
Think baroque architecture and boutique restaurants lining the river Danube, blended with the cutting-edge Ars Electronica Center (“the museum of the future”) and a harbour that was turned into one of Europe’s biggest graffiti galleries.
Linz won the EU award for European Capital of Smart Tourism in 2019, for their sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation and cultural heritage & creativity. They have a wealth of sustainable policies, good accessibility to public transport and an app to help you navigate the city with ease during your visit.

Innere Stadt (Old Town) – Where to stay in Linz Austria with family
The Old Town of Linz has a relaxed, community feel, with bustling shops and market stalls beneath impressive historical buildings.
Soak up this history and culture wandering through the narrow, cobbled streets and colourful houses. Here you will also find the impressive main square, the old cathedral and incredible views of the river Danube.
Innere Stadt (German for ‘inner city’) is also a great place to stay if you want easy access to the sights.
As its name suggests, this area is the absolute heart of Linz, and within walking distance of many tourist attractions, including the Ars Electronica Center, the Mariendom (the largest church in Austria), Lentos Art Museum and the Castle Museum.
By night, the Old Town fills up with light, atmosphere and family-friendly restaurants. Of course, it is the city centre, so there can at times be noise late into the evening.

Just outside of the Innere Stadt (or Old Town) of Linz you can find some real gems. Think more along the lines of romantic strolls down the Danube, visiting graffiti murals on the harbour, and dining in some of the less-touristy spots.
North of Innere Stadt, right there on the Danube harbour, you can find the Hotel Donauwelle, the epitome of affordable luxury. With a wellness sauna and fitness centre included, you can’t possibly go wrong.
Here you can also find some of the more affordable accommodation options in Linz, if you simply prefer a little peace and quiet away from the bustling city.
Makartviertel, an area just south of Inner Stadt, is full of parks and green spaces. It is also home to a number of Linz’s finer restaurants, making it an ideal location for couples.

Auberg – Where to stay in Linz Austria for the Outdoors
Auberg is the area just north of the Danube. Although the range of hotels here isn’t huge, it is the perfect location for those of you who like the outdoors.
Auberg has great access to the city centre and touristic locations, whilst remaining on the outskirts and being close to the countryside. The majority of Linz’s hiking trails start or cover areas north of the Danube, and it’s clear to see why.
With rolling hills in every direction, Auberg is the best place to stay in Linz if you want a hike or bike ride on your doorstep.
Special mention goes to Arte Hotel Linze, for their great location and unique designs. Each room in this hotel is different, so you could come back time and time again for a unique experience each time!

Blue Danube Airport – Where to stay in Linz Austria near the airport
If you’re laying over in Linz airport or want to spend a night or two closeby before your flight, you have two hotel options.
The first is in Traun, a small, residential area four kilometres from the airport. Unfortunately, yes, even from the closest hotel you’ll still need to take a short taxi or bus ride to get to the airport. Eee Hotel (yes, that really is its name) is clean, air-conditioned and pet-friendly.
Also on the bus route to the airport is Airotel (these names just keep getting better!). Another great, budget-friendly option for a hotel near Blue Danube Airport in Linz. This hotel is attached to the lavish Gasthof Linimayr restaurant and events space, which is another win for our growing list of affordable luxury in Linz.
Both of these options are parallel to the airport runway, meaning noise disturbance from overhead aircrafts will be minimal at worst!
