Central Lima – Where to Stay in Lima on a Budget

The historic center of Lima is the best area for tourists who have to choose where to stay in Lima for one night. The entire area of Central Lima is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to the historic Colonial homes, the Plaza de Armas, and the Government Palace. This is also one of the best places to stay in Lima Peru for travelers seeking budget-friendly accommodations.

If you choose one of the Lima hotels in this district, you will be within walking distance of many Lima attractions. However, this is also an area where you should use caution when out at night and take care to stick to the main streets that are well-lit.

Miraflores – Where to Stay in Lima for Tourists

One of the safest areas of Lima, as well as the most popular for travelers, is Miraflores. With a prime location along the coast, Miraflores is one of the more upscale areas of Lima, with fine dining, shopping and Parque Kennedy, also known as Cat Park for a large population of feral cats.

Located about ten kilometers south of the city center, Miraflores is also the site of pre-Incan ruins called Huaca Pucllana. The hotels in Miraflores Peru range from budget-friendly hostels to luxury high-rise hotels, and everything in between. If you are a points traveler, you’ll find all of the big-name hotel brands here in Miraflores.

Barranco – Where to Stay in Lima for Nightlife

Barranco is the Bohemian, artistic district of Lima. While the neighborhood had its heyday in the 1960s, the essence of art is still alive and well. In fact, Barranco is one of the best places to stay in Lima Peru for nightlife. Live music pours out onto the streets each evening, and sidewalk cafes line the streets.

Accommodation in the Barranco district tends to be more affordable than some of the swankier neighborhoods of Lima but again comes with safety precautions in the evenings. Of course, it’s a lively area, so you should exercise the same care you would in any large city.

Pueblo Libre – Where to Stay in Lima with Family

If you are looking for a family-friendly district in Lima, you should consider Pueblo Libre. This middle-class neighborhood is the perfect mixture of history, museums, and the conveniences of a residential area. Here you’ll find Lima’s oldest restaurant, Antigua Taberna Queirolo, which has been serving food and drink for over 140 years.

Another popular Lima attraction, the Larco Museum, is famous for a large collection of erotic pre-Columbian pottery. Simon Bolivar lived here, and his former home now houses the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology, and History of Peru.

San Isidro – Where to Stay in Lima with Kids

Another family-friendly district of Lima is San Isidro, an upscale neighborhood popular with affluent travelers. Located just north of Miraflores, this is one of the safest areas of Lima. In addition to upscale shopping and dining, San Isidro is also home to the Lima Golf Club, and Bosque del Olivar, an olive grove with more than 1,000 trees.

Huaca Huallamarca and Huaca Santa Cruz are two important archaeological sites located in San Isidro that are well worth a visit, whether you choose a hotel in this district or elsewhere.

Chorrillos – Where to Stay in Lima for Relaxation

South of Miraflores and Barranco, the Lima district of Chorrillos began as a small fishing village. Today, it is a typical harbor area with a Malecon along the seafront, and many restaurants serving up fresh seafood. Morro Solar is a hill overlooking the district.

An illuminated cross marks the spot, which also houses a planetarium and a war memorial. Chorrillos is also home to Pantanos de Villa, a natural reserve that is home to hundreds of birds, insects, and animals. There are also several beaches nearby to check out.

Punta Hermosa – Where to Stay near Lima for Popular Beaches

For travelers seeking a true beach vacation near Lima, there are several beach towns south of the city center. Punta Hermosa is one of the most popular beaches near Lima, and the summer months bring thousands of locals and tourists each weekend.

Big waves make this a popular surfing spot, and the beach is lined with cafes and restaurants. There’s even a bit of a nightlife scene here, for those that choose to spend the night rather than travel back to Lima for accommodation.

The next beach town south of Punta Hermosa is Punta Negra, about 50 kilometers south of Lima. The northern area next to Punta Hermosa is still a good surf spot with big waves, and there are some spots good for beginner surfers as well. You’ll also find many beach clubs along this stretch of the Pacific Ocean. You’ll find lots of mid-range 3-star hotels to stay in Punta Negra.

San Bartolo – Where to Stay near Lima for Watersports

Continuing south past Punta Negra is San Bartolo, another seaside town near Lima. The beaches here are located on small bays, making it a bit more family-friendly than the big-wave beaches to the north.

There are many watersports activities here, including fishing, boating, and water skiing. San Bartolo also has many hotels and restaurants, as well as a few nightclubs to explore. Accommodation options here range from budget-friendly guesthouses to four-star beachfront hotels with swimming pools.

Lima Airport – Where to Stay near Lima Airport

Lima Airport is located 12 kilometers from the city center, along the coast north of town. Many travelers only transit through Lima on their way to other areas of Peru, such as Cusco. If this is your plan, and you do not intend to explore Lima, then staying near the airport is convenient and economical.

Likewise, if you have an early morning departure or a late evening arrival, you may choose to stay near the airport and continue on to a proper Lima neighborhood for the rest of your stay. There are not many tourist attractions in this area, however, it’s easy to travel to other parts of Lima by taxi.
