Upon arrival in Hallstatt, you’ll see that it’s quite a small village, with nearly every hotel in Hallstatt within a five to ten minute walk. So, where you stay in Hallstatt is less dependent on location and more dependent on budget, as there are very few budget friendly hotels in Hallstatt. In the center of town is the World Heritage Museum Hallstatt, a great place to learn about the region and the history of Hallstatt.
The pet friendly Heritage Hotel Hallstatt is the best area for tourists arriving by ferry from the Hallstatt train station, while the Gasthof Bergfried is nearest the tourist information center where the buses arrive. No matter which Hallstatt accommodation you choose, you will have the best of Hallstatt at your doorstep. Just be prepared to pay if you’d like a Hallstatt hotel lake view.

One of the larger towns in the Hallstatt region is Bad Ischl, with a population of about 13,000. This is a spa town, and was once the summer holiday resort of the Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph I. The salt mines which made Hallstatt a profitable town also made Bad Ischl a spa town. There is a little bit of everything in Bad Ischl, including budget friendly accommodation and family friendly activities. There are several museums, and Kaiser Villa, the summer residence, is open for tours. You can also enjoy a round of golf, and a larger selection of restaurants than some of the smaller villages in the Salzkammergut region.
