Hallstatt – Best place to stay in Hallstatt Austria
Upon arrival in Hallstatt, you’ll see that it’s quite a small village, with nearly every hotel in Hallstatt within a five to ten minute walk. The village is best area to stay in Hallstatt, keep in mind it is fairly small.

Obertraun
With a tiny population similar to Hallstatt (under 800 residents) Obertraun offers an abundance of recreational opportunities in every season. You can travel between the two towns via ferry in about 30 minutes, or just ten minutes by car.
Obertraun is best known for the caves in the area, including Mammoth Cave and the Dachstein Ice Caves. In the summer, enjoy water sports on the lake, and winter brings snow sports at the nearby ski slope.

Bad Ischl
One of the larger towns in the Hallstatt region is Bad Ischl, with a population of about 13,000. This is a spa town, and was once the summer holiday resort of the Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph I.
The salt mines which made Hallstatt a profitable town also made Bad Ischl a spa town. There is a little bit of everything in Bad Ischl, including budget friendly accommodation and family friendly activities.
There are several museums, and Kaiser Villa, the summer residence, is open for tours. You can also enjoy a round of golf, and a larger selection of restaurants than some of the smaller villages in the Salzkammergut region.

Gosau
Just inland from Hallstatt lie the mountain villages of Gosau and Mittertal. This area is best known for outdoor adventure, and lies on the border between the Austrian states of Upper Austria and Salzburg.
This is the best area for tourists visiting the region to partake in downhill skiing. Dachstein West Ski Area has 51 kilometers of slopes served by 23 lifts. There’s also a freestyle snow park and a pretty decent apres-ski scene as well.
