Travel to Slovenia
Wedged between Italy and Croatia, Slovenia is often referred to as a nation of caves. It is home to Predjama Castle, the largest cave castle in the world.
Slovenia is also known for mountains and lakes, and it’s most iconic destination is Lake Bled. This picturesque lake contains and island and church with a steeple that has made it photo-famous around the world.
QUICK SLOVENIA FACTS
Currency: The Euro can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Slovenia, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.
Power Points: Most power points are the same as most other European power points (2 circular prongs). I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter especially for non Europeans.
Official Language: The official language of Slovenia is Slovenian.
Health: There are no major health concerns in Slovenia for travellers, however there’s a risk of tick-borne encephalitis in forests. I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.
Drinking Tap Water: The tap water is generally safe to drink, however, if you are unsure, make sure to ask your hotel receptionist or host.
Visa: Most countries don’t require a visa for short stays, to visit Slovenia.
Popular foods:
– Štruklji (rolled dumplings; made of leavened, phyllo, noodle and potato dough. Fillings can be either either sweet or salty).
– Potica (rolled dough Slovenian cake; rolled up and leavened dough, fillings with tarragon, walnuts, poppy seeds, chives, cheese, and raisins).
– Carniolan sausage (best pork meat and hard bacon are used to make the Carniolan sausage, to which salt, pepper, and garlic are added).
– Jota (ingredients are beans, potatoes, sauerkraut, dried pork and spices such as garlic, bay leaf, salt, and pepper).
When to go: From late spring through early October, Slovenia experiences perfect weather. Lower-lying places are cooled down by the steep mountains, making this an excellent time to go swimming in rivers like the Soča. In September and October, when the fall delivers blue-sky days and a variety of changing foliage, higher elevations are particularly stunning.
