Travel to Romania

Romania Destination

This Eastern European country shares borders with Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, and Moldova.

Best known for the Transylvania region that spawned the Dracula stories, Romania is home to dozens of castles and medieval fortresses.

The Carpathian Mountains offer endless outdoor recreation opportunities, while the capital city of Bucharest is the center of media, culture and art in Romania.

Currency: Romanian Leu can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Romania, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.

Power Points: Most power points are the same as most other European power points (2 circular prongs). Obviously I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter especially for non Europeans.

Official Language: The official language of Romania is Romanian.

Health: There are no major health concerns in Romania for travellers. Travellers are recommended to avoid packs of dogs as rabies is widespread in Romania. I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.

Drinking Tap Water: The tap water is generally safe to drink, however, most Romanians will recommend that you drink bottled water.

Visa: Most countries don’t require a visa for short stays, to visit Romania.

Popular foods:
Sarmale (spiced minced meat with rice, and onions, wrapped in cabbage leaves).
Mămăligă (polenta; served plain with sour cream and Romanian cheese).
Jumări (frying bits of bacon).
Cozonac (sweet bread filled with sweet walnut paste, poppy seed paste, or Turkish delight and raisins).

When to go: Romania is most enjoyable to visit between April and October, when the weather is comfortable for exploring the Transylvanian countryside and major towns like Bucharest. Awe-inspiring landscapes of the region’s many castles are available in the spring and fall.
