Our Guide to Mafia Island

When it comes to booking your dream holiday; it’s fair to say that everyone has a different idea of paradise. From romantic city breaks to unspoiled wilderness locations, there’s a place to suit every traveller’s diverse set of tastes and preferences.

If tranquil and unspoiled locations are your thing, however, we’d certainly recommend a trip to the largely unheralded Mafia Island. Located along the coast of the Indian Ocean and boasting a population in excess of 40,000, it offers an extremely appealing proposition to travellers despite being overshadowed by more renowned destinations like Zanzibar.

Make no mistake; Mafia and its surrounding archipelago including Jibondo, Juani and Chloe have a huge amount to offer.  In this post, we’ll explore the island in greater detail while asking what makes it so special?

Mafia Island – A Brief Guide

In total, Mafia Island is just a single, 30-minute flight south of Zanzibar, and one that arguably stands alone on the Tanzanian Coast.

This is because it’s one of the few islands that actively encourages visitors to explore its various offshore islands and sand bars. This makes for a unique one-of-a-kind experience, and one that enables you connect with locals and sample the island’s cultural heritage.

In terms of accommodation, there’s actually very few hotels located on the shores of Mafia Island. While this may seem like a negative, it creates a sense of exclusivity for travellers while also ensuring that the area is not overly populated with tourists at any given time.

While Mafia Island boasts an array of expansive beaches with sun-kissed shores, this destination is also home to a number of historical landmarks. Many of these are located on the smaller, surrounding islands, which are home to crumbling historical ruins that are now inhabited by local wildlife including moneys, bush babies, fruit bats and even wild pigs.

As a coastal location, you can probably also surmise that Mafia is renowned for its ocean life and heritage. To celebrate this, the island is home to an extremely popular Marine Park, which has been created to protect its reefs and provide fishing and snorkelling activities to visitors.

These are the best in the region, and should appeal to every single water sports enthusiast across the globe.

What Else do you Need to Know?

From a logistical perspective, travelling to Mafia Island is a relatively simple and quick journey. In fact, you can take a 30 minute flight from Dar es Salaam, while journeys are available regularly and are offered by a number of different providers.
