1. Cochinita Pibil

Cochinita pibil isn’t the most popular dish from Mexico but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a great dish. In our opinion this is one of the greatest dishes out there, because it is very tasty and not that world famous as some other dishes. We are certain that this dish will surprise you. Cochinita Pibil is pulled pork prepared by slow cooking in annatto, orange juice and lime. It is served with some pickled onions on top, giving you an incredibly tasty dish.

2. Tacos (al pastor)

Tacos are served in different variants. Tacos al pastor is one of the most popular tacos. These tacos are made from grilled pork. The basis of this taco is the lamb shoarma brought to Mexico by Lebanese immigrants. As a result, taco al pastor has a taste palette consisting of traditional herbs from the Middle East combined with herbs from Mexico.

3. Enchiladas

Enchiladas are originally from the Mayan period. At the time, people were eating corn tortillas with fish filling. Today, they use corn and flour tortillas for the enchiladas. Enchiladas are filled with meat, cheese, seafood, beans and vegetables. Usually when you order your enchilada you can decide what kind of topping you want. When the enchiladas are filled, they are usually covered with a chili sauce. Normally they eat enchiladas during breakfast but you can actually eat it at any time of the day.

4. Pozole

If you like soup, pozole is definitely something to try. Earlier in the pre-Hispanic period, pozole was used as part of a ritual sacrifice. Nowadays pozole is just a soup that is really tasty. Pozole is available with chicken, pork and a vegetarian version. The soup is stewed for a long time in corn, herbs and spices which makes it super tasty. When serving the soup, the lettuce, radish, lime and chili are added.

5. Mole sauce

Mole is a traditional marinade sauce. You can find this sauce in many different variants. Most importantly, in almost all cases, the mole has the same base of ingredients, including one or more different chili peppers. It is important to get a good mole sauce that has to be stirred for a long time. This sauce is mainly used with turkey or chicken. To taste the difference of the mole it is recommended to order it at different places.

6. Chilaquiles

Chilaquiles is a popular traditional dish eaten by Mexicans in the morning. This dish consists of a tortilla that is cut into quarters and topped with a spicy salsa. In many cases, an egg, chicken, cheese and cream are added on top. Often when serving chilaquiles, frijoles are added. Frijoles are healthy non-baked beans.

7. Tostadas

Tortillas are tasty when they are fresh. When tortillas aren’t eaten in days they become stuffy. They are baked to make them tasty. This is why the tostadas, or fried tortillas, were invented. Tostadas are very simple and delicious, they are fried in cooking oil until they are crispy. When they are ready, many ingredients are added. Popular toppings include frijoles (beans), cheese, meat, seafood, and ceviche for example.

8. Elote

Elote is a dish that you can find on almost every street corner in Mexico. It is a corncob that is cooked and served on a stick. They are eaten like an ice cream. A lot of ingredients are added to the corn to make it a delicious snack for example: salt, lime, chili powder, butter, mayonnaise and sour cream.

9. Guacamole

Guacamole is perhaps one of the most famous dishes in Mexico. You can find this dish not only in Mexico, but also in countries such as Guatemala. This is because the Guacamole sauce originates from the Aztecan period. Guacamole is made from avocados, onions, tomatoes, lime and chili peppers, and garlic. Usually Guacamole is eaten with tortilla chips or served as a side dish. This dish is really easy to make at home and you definitely should order this one if you are in Mexico!

10. Mezcal

Mezcal is a drink also known as tequila’s little sister. It is a drink consumed purely by Mexicans. The drink has a strong smoke flavor. Mezcal is made in the same way as tequila. The only difference is that Mezcal is made from the green agave plant and tequila from the blue agave.
