Travel to Namibia

Namibia Destination

In Southern Africa, Namibia shares a border with South Africa, Botswana, and Angola. One of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, Namibia is popular with overland travelers.

The sand dunes at Sossusvlei are some of the highest in the world, and the desolate landscape draws photographers from all over. It’s also home to Fish River Canyon, one of the largest and oldest canyons in the world.

QUICK NAMIBIA FACTS

Currency: Namibian Dollar and the South African Rand are both used in Namibia and can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Namibia, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.

Power Points: Namibia power plugs are three circular prongs, similarly used in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and some African countries. I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter.

Official Language: The official languages of Namibia are Afrikaans, German, and English.

Health: There are a number major health concerns in Namibia for travellers, such as rate of HIV/AIDS infection, yellow fever (you’ll need a valid yellow fever certificate to enter Namibia), malaria and other waterborne, foodborne, parasitic and other infectious diseases are common. I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.

Drinking Tap Water: Tap water is generally not safe to drink; bottle water only.

Visa: Most countries don’t require a visa for short stays, to visit Namibia.

Popular foods:
Mahangu Pap (pearl millet flour porridge).
Omagungu (boiled mopane worms/caterpillars).
Biltong (thinly sliced meat, marinated with salt and vinegar, spiced, and then hung to dry).
Boerewors (course-ground sausages, made up of minced beef, salt, and vinegar and spices).

When to go: Namibia can be visited year-round, but the dry season, which runs from June to October, is the most ideal time to visit the country. The best time to see wildlife is during the dry season in all parks, but especially in Etosha. Generally speaking, the weather is dry and pleasant.
