Travel to Hungary
Probably most famous for the capital city of Budapest, Hungary is a Central European country bordering Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, and Ukraine.
Hungary is most famous for thermal baths, of which there are thousands throughout the country. Hungarian cuisine is comfort food, with goulash being one of the more popular dishes.
QUICK HUNGARY FACTS
Currency: Hungarian Forint can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Hungary, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.
Power Points: Most power points are the same as most other European power points (2 circular prongs). Obviously I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter especially for non Europeans.
Official Language: The official language of Hungary is Hungarian.
Health: The only health concerns in Hungary for travellers is Tick-borne encephalitis which is a risk in forested areas. I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.
Drinking Tap Water: The tap water is generally safe to drink in Hungary.
Visa: Most countries don’t require a visa for short stays, to visit Hungary.
Popular foods:
– Goulash (a hearty and warm stew filled with beef, spices, onions, and potatoes).
– Chicken paprikash (similar to a fisherman’s stew but with chicken).
– Sour cherry soup (includes sour cherries, sugar, and sour cream).
– Dobosh cake (several layers of sponge cake and chocolate layered on top of each other).
When to go: Given the pleasant and warm weather with sporadic rain, spring and fall are generally the most enjoyable times to visit Hungary, although the months of April through May and September through October are the most suitable. A tempting combination of nice weather, affordable rates, and less crowding at popular landmarks, museums, and historical sites may be found during these shoulder months.
