Shevchenkivskyi – Where to stay in Kiev for First Timers

This central location is the best area for tourists who are visiting Kiev for the first time. The Shevchenkivskyi District is so full of museums and monuments, that unless you are staying in Kiev for an extended time, you might never even leave this neighborhood. There are over a dozen museums and galleries, plus hundreds of historic monuments in the Shevchenkivskyi District.

The famous Golden Gates of Kiev are found here, as well as many churches, including St. Sophia’s and St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery. Don’t miss Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the Independence Monument, which sits at the center of a lively square.

Pecherskyi – Where to stay in Kiev on a Budget

Just south of the Shevchenkivskyi District is Pecherskyi, which also lines the waterfront area. It’s the business and political center of Kiev, but it’s also a good place to look for budget-friendly accommodation in Kiev. Although there are fewer attractions than in the Shevchenkivskyi District, Pecherskyi still enjoys a good central location that is perfect for touring Kiev.

This district also offers a lot of green space along the river, and is home to the botanical garden, as well as the Park of Eternal Glory. It’s also somewhat of a cultural hub, with several libraries and theaters.

Bessarabka – Where to stay in Kiev for Nightlife

In a small area between the Shevchenkivskyi District and Pecherskyi lies Bessarabka. It is best known for its namesake market, the Bessarabka Market, a foodie destination of Kiev where you can shop alongside the locals and sample Ukrainian treats. The building itself is quite interesting, and the neighborhood is known for Art-Nouveau architecture.

Bessarabka also happens to be the nightlife center of Kiev. With the most nightclubs in one area, this is the best choice if you want to know where to stay in Kiev for nightlife. For shopping, look no farther than Khreschatyk Street, Kiev’s “main street” which is closed to traffic on Saturday evenings and Sundays.

Podil – Where to stay in Kiev for Tourists

Just north of the city center, along the riverbanks, lies the neighborhood of Podil, sometimes called Podol. This is one of the more historic districts of Kiev, with monasteries, churches, and museums. One particular item of interest is the Ukranian National Museum of Chernobyl, a moving exhibit of the world’s largest nuclear accident.

There are several cultural attractions in Podil, as well as restaurants for every price range. Being a bit outside the city center means you will be able to find budget-friendly accommodation in Podil. It’s still within walking distance of everything you might wish to see, so you aren’t compromising a bit by choosing accommodation here.

Holosiivskyi – Where to stay in Kiev for Outdoor Lovers

Covering quite a large area south of everything already mentioned is the Holosiivskyi District. Home to the Holosiivskyi National Nature Park, this is a great place to stay in Kiev if you like to spend time outdoors, but you still want the convenience of being near the city center. There’s even a ski resort in this district!

With the main bus station and several train stations, it’s easy to get around to other areas of Kiev while enjoying a quieter atmosphere in the evenings. On the cultural side, the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine offers an interesting education on traditional Ukrainian life.
