Ukraine

This Eastern European country is often called the “breadbasket” of Europe, thanks to a huge agricultural industry producing sunflower and wheat. Kiev is the capital and largest city, located in the north on the Dnieper River. In the south, Odesa is a popular destination on the Black Sea. Many people think of the Chernobyl disaster of 1986 when Ukraine is mentioned, and this site is now spawning a tourist trade for visitors.

QUICK UKRAINE FACTS

Currency: Ukrainian Hryvnia can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Ukraine, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.

Power Points: Most power points are the same as European power points (2 prongs). If you aren’t European, obviously I would recommend that you take a Travel Adapter.

Official Language: The official language of the Ukraine is Ukrainian, some areas of the Ukraine do speak Russian as well. You’ll have no issue communicating with people here, most people understand or can speak English – or you can use Google Translate.

Health: There are a few health concerns in Ukraine for travellers. I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination. The tap water is not generally safe to drink, only bottled water is recommended to drink.
