Travel to Turkey
Turkey sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, and as such has a turbulent, but interesting, history.
The city of Istanbul marks the official border between the two continents, and is a modern city that is also home to the Hagia Sophia, a 6th-century cathedral.
Cappadocia is another popular destination in Turkey, famous for hot air balloons and a distinctive landscape of sandstone spires.
QUICK TURKEY FACTS
Currency: Turkish lira can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Turkey, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.
Power Points: Most power points are the same as most other European power points (2 circular prongs). I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter.
Official Language: The official language of Turkey is Turkish.
Health: There are a number of major health concerns in Turkey for travellers. I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.
Drinking Tap Water: The tap water is generally safe to drink, however, it’s recommend for tourist to only consume bottled water. If you are unsure, make sure to ask your hotel receptionist or host.
Visa: Most countries don’t require a visa for short stays, to visit Turkey.
Popular foods:
– Lahmacun (Turkish style pizza; topping of minced meat, salad and lemon juice on bread and can be wrapped, folded in half).
– Corba (warm lentil or tomato soup).
– Yaprak Sarma (vine leaves, filling of rice and onion flavored with mint, currant, pepper and cinnamon).
– Borek (Turkish pastry is filled with minced meat or spinach and cheese).
When to go: The most enjoyable times to visit Turkey’s extensive number of historic sites are often April, May, September, and October because of the mild weather during these months. June through September are the hottest months of the year, with temperatures on the south coast reaching the mid-thirties.
