This Caribbean island is a territory of the United States, with its own culture and cuisine. Primarily a destination for beach-goers, the city of San Juan has a beautiful Old Town area that is full of lively cafes and historic sites.

Inland, El Yunque is a tropical rainforests that is full of tropical plants and animals. The territory also includes offshore islands, including Vieques and Culebra.

Currency: USD can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout Puerto Rico, however keep in mind that smaller cities or towns may not have access to ATMs and its recommended to withdraw cash and take it with you.

Power Points: Most power points are the same as USA power points (2 diagonal prongs). I would recommend you take a Travel Adapter especially for non Australians.

Official Language: The official language of Puerto Rico is Spanish.

Health: There are some major health concerns in Puerto Rico for travellers. I would recommend that you contact your doctor a few weeks before you travel as in some cases you need to start any medication a few days before your trip or you may need to get a vaccination.

Drinking Tap Water: The tap water is generally safe to drink, however, if you are unsure, make sure to ask your hotel receptionist or host.

Visa: Most nationalities must apply for a visa before entry into the country to visit Puerto Rico.

Popular foods:
Empanadillas (fried or baked, the filling is seasoned with either sofrito, and achiote).
Rellenos de papa (mashed potato croquette with picadillo or ground beef or pork seasoned with sofrito).
Pasteles (soft vegetable dough and meat filling, steamed in banana leaves).
Pernil (slow roasted pork shoulder).

When to go: The most enjoyable months to visit Puerto Rico are from December through April because of the mild temperatures, secluded beaches, and local festivals, but this is also the busiest travel period for visitors. The summer and fall provide more affordable travel and warmer beaches. Puerto Rico is a wonderful destination all year round because of its pleasantly warm climate.
