Like all great cities in the world Manchester in the UK is both a geographical location and a state of mind. Manchester combines the world class sophistication of a major financial and cultural hub with the rough-hewn charm built from its roots as an industrial and trading center.
From its humble beginnings in 79 AD as a Roman fort at Castlefield where the rivers Medlock and Irwell merge, Manchester has emerged as the second city in the UK (London is first of course), but Manchester is second to none when it comes to excitement, culture, food and fun! The pride of Mancunians (Manchester natives) is evident when they describe the city to newbies and this is one of the main distinguishing features of Manchester: It is a sprawling, exciting, vibrant city which somehow retains a very cool small town vibe! Manchester is like many small cities linked by a common history and identity, with each part having a unique flavor and mood.
