To me, one of the things that makes a truly strong relationship is not needing anything but each other. When you don’t need long walks on the beach and delicious, candlelit dinners to feel like you’re one with another person, you know you’ve found something truly special. Still, while your relationship may not need anything to spice things up, if you can have a romantic getaway then why not go for it? Here, I’ve listed some trips and destinations around the world which carry their own romantic je ne sais quoi. If you want to get away from it all with your partner, but you’re not sure where, here are some wonderful holidays to consider.
Although Bali is certainly beautiful, it’s so much more than a pretty postcard. Aside from the paradisiacal scenery that attracts tourists from all over the world, the unique cultural curiosities and traditions are what really makes it worth a visit. Watching a sunset in the popular beach resort of Sanur is something you’ll never forget. The 15th-century temple of Tanah Lot rises from the ocean nestled in a small rock formation, and makes for some incredible photo opportunities. While you’re there, you also need to see the five beautiful waterfalls scattered between Singaraja and Bedugul. It’s a bit of a climb to reach a point where you can see all of the roaring, cascading falls, but it’s well worth the effort! If you want to visit place that breathes romance, while avoiding the bustle and stress of a city, then Bali is certainly somewhere to consider.
Bruges looks and feels like something straight from a fairy tale. The city’s cobblestone streets, quaint, Tudor houses, and wide open squares all fuse wonderfully into a potent air of romance. That’s all before you take the mandatory couple’s cruise around the picturesque canals. There’s far too much in Bruges to fit into one trip, but if there’s one thing you simply can’t miss it’s the stunning bird’s-eye view you get from the top of the Belfort. Climb 366 steps up a spiral staircase, reach the top and then let the sight take your breath away! Another great activity for couples is taking a ride in a horse-drawn carriage to Beguinage, a massive, ancient monastery filled with quaint ponds and beautifully designed bridges. Book well in advance, and you’ll be able to find dozens of affordable canal-side hotels, full of charming parlours and guest rooms, and turndown services which always, always include divine Belgian chocolate.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Wherever you stay and whatever sights you decide to visit, you won’t be able to help being swept away in Buenos Aires’ melting-pot culture and incredible nightlife. To really turn up the romance, go to the Teatro Colon, recline in their lavish velvet seats, and take in an enchanting ballet or opera. For some of the finest restaurants and boutiques in the whole of South America, visit the Palermo neighbourhood, where you can walk off all that gorgeous food in acres of well-kept parks, ideal for sunset picnics and long walks. No matter how much you and your partner have practiced your steps, be sure to visit the Rojo Tango and dance the night away. The glamorous velvet-lined interiors, five-star food, and famous cabaret performances are something that you won’t easily forget. Before you set a date, remember that the seasons in Argentina are similar to the ones here; scorching around Christmas and chilly in June.
The south, aside from Florida, gets pretty neglected when it comes to American tourist destinations. However, this city in South Carolina might just be the perfect place for you and your partner to escape to. Stroll leisurely through streets that are lined with blooming magnolia in the South of Broad neighbourhood, which is full of sprawling historical mansions and tranquil parks. In particular, be sure to visit the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. The scenery here will make you think that you’ve woken up in heaven, finished off with picturesque views of Charleston Harbour and peaceful waterfalls. Another great thing to visit is the Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens, where you can check out the estate’s butterfly pavilion and heirloom rose gardens. The city itself is brimming with great food, live music, and countless other things to see and do.
You knew this was coming, didn’t you? Rome, along with Paris, has a reputation for being one of the most romantic cities in the world, and that isn’t without merit! Full of beautifully carved fountains that have been there for centuries, some of the best dining in Europe (that’s saying something!) and enchanting piazzas, you won’t be able to help stealing kisses at every other sight you come across! The sheer, potent romance in this city is probably why it’s such a popular stop for Mediterranean cruises. Be sure to stroll around the Piazza Navona with its intriguing and tastefully erotic fountains, interspersed by delightful cafes. After a wonderful night at a restaurant, where you’ll probably have your first taste of real Italian food, have a stroll around the Villa Borghese park. New York’s Central Park doesn’t have much on this incredible expanse of greenery! You have to see at least one opera when in Rome, so make sure it’s at the magnificent Teatro Dell’opera Di Roma.
If you or your other half are history buffs, then Fez could be the perfect destination for you. Stepping through the gates of this city feels like going through a time portal. The city’s covered markets, medieval streets and architecture, and all kinds of exotic curiosities shows a place that never lost touch with its ancient roots. Heri el Souani should be at the top of your list, where you can see granaries designed by an ancient and influential king. Medina Square is another must-see stop in Fez, where you can walk through the stunning marble gate of Bab Mansour. Even if you’re not that into art and architecture, you’ll need to stop and check out some of its incredible mosaics and carvings. If it leaves you wanting more, head over to the House of Venus. Here, you can check out some of the city’s finest mosaics, and easily access the ancient Temple of Saturn site. Once you get tired of the historic wonders, (and that’s going to take a while!) you may want to head out to some of the surrounding ski slopes. Even if all you do is fall over, the picturesque mountain views will be something you and your partner cherish forever!
If you know you want to get away, but you’re afraid of leaving one stressful city for another, then Kyoto is the destination for you. This is the one sure place on earth you can come to and experience true peace and tranquillity. Full of historic temples, palaces and shrines, you’ll have no problem finding the next exotic curiosity to feast your mind on. Swaying cherry-blossom trees line the pavements wherever you go, and beautiful pagodas rise up out of the picturesque Japanese countryside. When you’re there with your partner, you should also make time for walking around one of the city’s Chinese gardens, full of budding plants and beautiful Buddhist temples. If there’s one truly unforgettable sight in Kyoto, it’s the view of the ancient temple Enryaku-Ji, whose intricate architecture towers over a breath-taking mountain range. You won’t find much nightlife or spectacle in Kyoto, but you’ll certainly come home feeling refreshed!
